I have no doubt whatsoever that a great majority of Ameri- cans are rational, responsible, and compassionate and that they will pull together and resist the impetus toward violence. We must use our mourning for the slain as an opportunity to renew our determination to break down the barriers between people and rebuild trust and a sense of common purpose. We must reach out and rediscover what we all share and at the same time respect our differences. Each of us needs to do more to further cooperation and generosity between individuals and groups.
