Show SOUTHERN UTAH NEWS Opinion 4 WEDNESDAY APRIL 19, 1995 Dixie Speaks Put your money where your mouth is. The Fredonia Kanab Kane County area needs to understand that the only concentrated effort to bring business to our economically-depresse- d area ended with the departure of Utah Arizona Action Team director Peter Solie. e Solie was hired and worked toward this purpose. While success didn't happen overnight, Solie' s very position indicated to interested parties that we were serious about growth and economic stability. I have two thoughts on this subject. First of all, it's illogical to expect someone to take employment here, with a salary funded primarily on grant money. (The primary source of Peter Solie' s salary last year was a U.S. Forest Service grant.) How effort to their job, when by can they dedicate an all-onecessity, they must expend a good portion of their time trying to find grant money for next year's salary? Counting on grant money is not my idea of secure employment. Secondly, we would like to become a area, not dependent on the controls, whims and occasion kindness of the government. Yet look at what we have done-we'v- e expected other entities to fund our economic director. It's ironic how quickly we judge groups who beg for hand-outAre we any different? The future of our area shouldn't depend on if's... if the Forest Service grant money can be used for salaries... if the state is willing to give us a little additional money this year... if... if... if. If we start taking responsibility for our future, our area will survive. We call upon local government agencies to fully e economic director, somebne who is fund a totally devoted to soliciting, supporting and assisting new area businesses.
