It wasnt long before a one hundred and fifty pound large powerful Saint Bernard, named Max, entered the picture. He didnt cost a cent, J im said. Y eah, sure. We bought a dog house he never used. There was feeding dishes, drinking dishes, vitamins, an assortment of pet supplies, and trips to the dog beauty parlor. Then, we installed a sixty dollar doggie door, big enough for a man to crawl through, into a six hundred and fifty dollar door. It will be their dog, the boys will share equally in feeding, walking, and playing with Max, I preached. And do everything else that needs to be done, I added. Everyone agreed. The first week, our youngest son was assigned the job of picking up dog pies in the yard. Hed scoop and gag, scoop and gag. One day he brought in his scooper and surrendered any claim he had on Max to his older brother. After one day of scooping, his brother surrendered any claim he had on Max to me. Ho, dog, I said after one day of scooping and handed the scooper to Jim. Max soon became attached to one member of the household, and Max lived like a King in our house. Jim lugged in ten pound bags of cheese and beef flavored d dog food, dog food, liver-flavore- and cases of fancy dog food. Max turned up his nose. Why? Someone was slipping him table snacks. It wasnt longbefore Max received his own helping of the family meals. The loveable chubby bundle of bad breath even had his own chair. And, of course, when it came to picking bubble gum off of the dog5 s teeth guess who got the job. Jim and his dog had a special bond. Whenever his master came home from work, Max pounced on him like he was a pork chop. One day, I locked the dog in the bathroom and pounced on Jim, slobbering and painting like a dog. What have you done with my dog? he shrieked. One day, during a storm, Max answered natures call. He spotted a cat. The cat ran over the pool, which was covered with a solar blanket. Dog followed cat. Dog got caught in the blanket. Dog started to sink. I looked into dogs brown eyes and fully clothed, jumped into the pool and pulled Max out. As I stumbled into the house, my oldest son came home and wanted to know why I was swimming in the rain with my clothes on. Although my son and I share the same genes and chromosomes, I never could figure out what went on in his head that day. Max went to dog heaven years ago. Jim and the boys miss him, but to be completely honest, I miss him the most. Although I often joke about the pets we have owned, they were always loved and well cared for.
