Show SOUTHERN UTAH NEWS Community Shall we dance- By Daphne Negus The Kane County Community Theater and Orchestra, under the baton of Maestro Kortney Stirland are presenting for our a producdelight on August of and tion Rodgers "The Hammersteins King and ", directed by Lena Puro. This popular musical is based 4-- 6 on Margaret Londons bestseller, ANNA AND THE KING OF SIAM, itself drawn from A BRITISH GOVERNESS IN THE COURT OF SIAM written over a hundred years ago by Mrs. Anna Leonowens, a British widow then residing in Bangkok. Mrs. Leonowens was employed in 1862 by H.M. King Mongkut to teach English to some of the 82 children given him by his 35 wives. Mongkuts memory is revered throughout Thailand forhis wise administration rather than for his ability to dance around the palace without stumbling over the hoop skirts of a Victorian schoolmarm'in the fantasies of a priggish Victorian. In fact, "The King and I" is banned in Thailand where Mongkuts achievements changed life so much for the better for his loving subjects. Prior to his ascendancy to the throne in 1851, Mongkut was a monk in a Buddhist monastery for 27 years. Throughout his life, unlike former Siamese rulers who paid little heed to other cultures, he studied foreign languages and religions, astronomy and world geography. The foreign dignitaries he invited to King Mongkuts coronation were not required to stretch on the floor. themselves (It was his son, Chulalongkorn, who decreed in the early 1870s that everybody was to remain upright in the presence of the king. In a dramatic moment, all present got up from the floor.) Mongkut startled everybody when at the customary annual ceremony where Siamese nobles WEDNESDAY AUGUST 3, 1991 13 tarrum-tum-tum- ? were required to pledge loyalty to the monarch, he pledged HIS loyalty toTHE PEOPLE. Thereafter he came out of the palace regularly twice a week to listen to anyone who had a grievance unheard of for decades during previous royal administrations. Silver bullet money was part of Siamese currency until Mongkut, with the help of foreign advisers, instigated some reforms including the minting of modern money. Transportation within his capital, Bangkok, (which means Village of OliveTrees) was by river or a network of canals until he built New Road, the first dry road. Mongkut made pacts and trade agreements with Great Britain, the United States, France and other Western powers. Until that time relationships with Siamese rulers had been poorly handled by outside governments. Howd ever, King Mongkut was to the advantages of such alliances. He sent ambassadors to England with a portrait he sat for, especially as a gift to Queen Victoria in 1 958. In return for the gift from President Buchanan of a large quantity of government publications, he wrote offering the American president some of his war elephants. President Lincoln was in the White House by the time the letter arrived. In spite of the effect such war machines might have had in the battlefields of the day, President Lincoln declined with thanks the generous but unwieldy offer of such largesse. H.M. Rama IV of Siam, King open-minde- Mason, went back to England after five years in Bangkok. There, her first novel sold so well Mrs. Leonowens wrote a second which hashed up absurd cliches about Oriental harems and would have fed the rag press media (had it flourished in the late 1 9th century as it does now) in lurid headlines for at least a week. Proving that admirable flowers can grow from among weeds, Annas two sensational books gave inspiration to Margaret Landon, whose popular novel was set to music by Richard Rodgers with book and lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II.
