Show SOUTHERN UTAH NEWS Community Straight Shots & WEDNESDAY MARCH 7, 1990 Backlashes By Bob McKay Certain song lyrics make profound statements. Take for example the popular lyrics about a gambler, . . . You have to know when to hold them. Know when to fold them. Know when to walk away and know when to run . . . The gambler giving the advice obviously understood the gambling system and the element of luck. Hunters may understand the subtle techniques of successful hunting, but too few understand the biopolitical processes which regulate their activities. There is greatly increased interest in the biopolitical process regulating the Paunsaugunt deer hunting unit Tonight there is an organizational meeting of a new sportsmens club at the Red Hills Convention Center at 7:30 p.m. aimed at giving this areas sportsmen more input into management of the local deer herd. For the last month the new Board of Directors of the reorganized Paunsaugunt Landowners Wildlife Association has been achieve their organizational purposes. Perhaps, the following comments will help. Game management has six simple annual steps in its master plan for each unit: 1. Select management objectives; review and change as needed. 2. Assess herd and habitat. 3. Set harvest goal compatible with objectives and status of herd. 4. Set hunting regulations as needed to achieve harvest goal. 5. Hunting season. 6. Monitor harvest; compare with harvest goal. The current deer management objective of the Paunsaugunt unit is to provide a limited number of resident and nonresident hunters with the opportunity to pursue large mature bucks a quality hunting experience. At the same time, the DWR recognized there had to be some provision to compensate the private landowner for providing the states deer with water and groceries far in excess of the ratio of public to private lands; hence the permits. holding lengthy meetings. The success of the current Whether these organizations share mutual goals is presently management objectives are well immaterial. However, without documented. The private land permittees enjoyed even better success. Probably the bitterest pill to swallow is that management strategies for quality hunting are not compatible with the strategy for maximum buck harvest, maximum deer harvest, or maximum hunting opportunity. Another bitter pill is that the game belongs to the state by federal law arid not Kane County. Local hunters must compete with hunters throughout the state for a permit to hunt local deer. But is this so bad? Id hate to have the few residents in the northeast part of the state tell me I cant hunt the Three Comers area because I live near the Arizona border or the residents of St. George not allowing Kanab hunters in the Pine Valley area. The bottom line is that the biopolitical process has provisions for change if needed by those whohave done theirhome-woraren't selfish, are well organized and dont confuse observations with conclusions. k, Vet officer visits Ducks Unlimited sets DinnerAuction The Kanab Comof Unlimited will Ducks mittee hold its second annual Dinner and Auction at Red Hills Motel and Convention Center on April 21. The Ducks Unlimited success story is really starting to spread," said Kanab Ducks Unlimited chairman, Don Fern. Local Ducks Unlimited fundraising events held throughout the country last year contributed towards Ducks Unlimiteds national fundraising effort of $59.3 million during 1988 alone. But whats even more important to realize is that this national fundraising total must increase this year if the North American waterfowl habitat race is to be won. Fern explained that each year the United States loses 450,000 acres of wetland habitat. Ducks Unlimited has raised over $500 million and enhanced and restored over 5 million wetland acres, encompassing over 4,000 wetland projects, in an effort to reverse this destructive trend. DUS projects provide habitatfor over 600 wildlife species including ducks, geese, and endangered species like the whooping crane and bald eagle. While DU has accomplished a great deal since its founding in 1937, the rapid draining of our Committee are a vital part of DUs efforts."
