Show SOUTHERN UTAH NEWS WEDNESDAY Commentary Public Pulse On the Write Track The Chamber of Commerce is planning a spring cleanup and beautifi- s cation effort. What do you feel the main priorities should be? By Jeanette Rusk Im writing this on Sunday, the day after I ran the Lake Powell Marathon. Since a marathon is such an extraordinary experience, Fd like to tell you a little bit about my 14th encounter with the event. I feel pretty dragged out today, and I have some sore muscles, but Im not doing too badly, considering that I ran 26.2 miles yesterday. This was not one of my better marathon performances, but Im glad I did it because its a challenging goal I had set for myself, and I was able to achieve it. I love running and I especially like running. I started running 11 years ago in Tucson. I started with a half mile and steadily worked my way up to six miles a day. I got hooked fairly quickly. Here was a very efficient form of aerobic exercise, a routine that gave me an opportunity to be in touch with my body in nature on a daily basis, and a great motivator toward general physical and mental fitness. I am in southern Utah because of the marathon. I came up from Tucson to run the St. George Marathon in 1983, and I was so impressed with the town and the area that the next year when long-distan- ce I decided to relocate, St. George was one of the places I thought of. I found a job on the newspaper there and moved to St. George in June of 1984. Ive run the St. George Marathon four times, and have run 10 others in Utah, Arizona, and California. I ran the first Lake Powell Marathonlastyear, and enjoyed it so much that I determined right after last years race I wanted to try to do it again this year. Its an interesting, scenic course, starting in Big Water, following along the lake, culmiloop nating with a five-mil- e around Page, and ending at the City Park. While the course was almost the same this year, and the Letters Continued from Page 4 secure the sound system. Mucho thanks go to Kanab H.S. Esteem Club, Kanab Middle and Valley Highs Project Teamwork groups and V.H.S. F.H A members for providing food and for making Mr. Bytheway feel so welcome. Special thanks go to Jeanine Swapp, Sandy Lord, Russell Rogers and Lee Stockard for their extra efforts. And many thanks go to all of you (you know who you are wish I had room to mention you all) who help me in our own Kane County effort against substance abuse. You are all 5 MARCH 7, 1990 condition s for the race were even better (it was a mild, overcast day with a little light rain and not much wind), I was slower this year and it was harder for me. I dont even know exactly why, but thats the way it is with marathons. You never master the marathon because there are too many factors that can influ- ence the outcome. Last year my time was 3:55 my slowest to date, but respectable for an acknowledged difficult course. This year I was 20 minutes slower, with a 4:1 5, and youd think that would have made it easier. Not so. I hit the wall at 21 miles at the top of the hill coming into Page, and it was only sheer determination to finish thatkept me putting one foot in front of the other to get through those last five miles. I had some pangs of disappointment after the race yesterday. How could I have been slower and yet the race was harder and I was in worse shape at the end, I questioned. I had blown my goal of never going over four hours in a marathon (but since I hope to do them throughout my life, it was bound to happen sometime). All in all, it would seem a pretty dismal result after nearly three months of preparation and training. While Im disappointed that I didnt muster a better race performance yesterday, Im still glad I set the goal of runningthe second annual Lake Powell Marathon and that I' hung in there during the training period as well as during the race itself. I Pam Rokinson, Kanab: I was on the Chamber and we talked about building a fence and planting tall trees around Pughs Trailer Court, and picnic benches and a little park there at the entry sign. We talked about the Chamber getting volunteers to do the work. I think we should have buildings in the same motif and make it a western town, things like puttingfronts on thebuildings. A lot has been done already. I like what the church has done with the gazebo." . : One Leann McDonald, Kanab: me bothers that really bad The space between the sidething Nancy Blair, Kanab: is dogs getting into garbage on garbage day. There should be a proclamation to keep dogs in on garbage day. Another thing is the junk cars. You never see anyone doing anything with them. There are companies that buy scrap metal. I live in the Ranchos, and that is the worst spot there is. In town, its paved and cleaner. The Ranchos is spread out, and I guess people feel no one is bothered by the garbage. Theres a big contrast between the Ranchos and town." walk and the highway is bad. Some businesses take care of it and some dont. Its ugly and its right on the main street. The swimming pool is not taken care of very well, especially in front and. the planters. If the main street looked nice and clean, it would help. People dont get on the back streets that much. We need a general cleanup, with people responsible for their own yards." Gary Crosby, Kanab: The and thats what life is about. We enjoy and succeed to the extent that we keep trying and finish the race. I got a nice surprise at the Cliff Hitchcock, Kanab: I dont like the trucks parked alongside the road, and Im a truck driver myself. We need to have a place for the trucks to park. They shouldnt run their jake brake at night. We should plant a few more flowers around the sidewalks, and flowers and trees at the entry ways to town." awards ceremony following the-rawhen I learned that, in spite of my slow time, I had won $200 for taking second place among the kind help and understandwomens masters (over 40) run- ing given so willingly at this time. ners. It is true that we are a bunch of dumb Indians that dont know enough to come in out of the rain, but when there is a group that doesnt want to do somewell you know. Your thing track record with dealing with Indians, lets face it, is not the best. I remember hearing a radio personality saying that one of the Indian leaders was bad for all Indian people. I then became interested in his work, after all if the white man didnt like him, he could not be bad. So keep up the good work, as we dont have enough members lined up yet Ralph Castro Kaibab Reservation number one priority should be for everyone to clean up their own yard. Our church is planning to have a breakfast anc then go around as a group anc clean up the Ranchos. It woulc help to work in the entry ways to town, like around the signs (Greatest Earth on Show) to have them weed-fre- e and clean. To have the parks and recreation areas clean is really important. mnumniimimi nnxt.-r- i The Southern Utah News (ISSN No. 0049-- 1 659) is published every Wednesday at 40 E. Center.
