Show SOUTHERN UTAH NEWS - Thursday, August 11, 1988- - Page Eight ABC's "Home" Show Films In Kanab KANAB American Broadcasting Companys (ABC) television crews began arriving Monday and Tuesday, Aug. 2 and 3, to start filming the Kropf home renovation and begin preparing for a weeks worth of Home shows to be produced from Kanab. Julia and Robert Kropf, a young married Kanab couple won the Home shows $10,000 home make-ovcontest. The contest, in which more than 850,000 entries were submitted, offered a make-ove- r, including everything from dry walling to furnishing. Home is a nationwide morning show that offers viewers an alternative from game shows and soap operas. Instead, the show devotes itself to home issues and helpful suggestions to improve home living. According to Homes public relations director, Joanne Niden, Home took to the road this summer to produce the show from Minnesota, Connecticut, Colorado and Indiana. Part of their summer tour was to include the hometown of the contest winner. Since the Kropfs won the contest, Kanab became a location fora weeks worth of Home shows. From their headquarters at Ray Lopemans Frontier Movie Town, ABC crews spread out to discover the hidden talent harbored by Kanab and southern Utah. Much to the surprise of Kanabiles, ABC unearthed a multitude of talented residents. Crews began film ing in the area as soon as they arrived. Almost all appointments were furnished locally and all THE HOME SHOW of ABC television one-roo- construction came from local craftsmen. m and various Kanab residents demonstrating their talents fom gardening tips to crafts. The first three shows to be aired next wetek, Aug. 15 to 19, were filmed Sunday, Aug. 7 in front of the Kropf home. One segment features Carol Homes craft expat, Duvall, teaching Kanab children how to paint with colored sand on paper plates. Another segment finds Kanabites chowing down atablock party sponsored by ABC and catered by Houstons Trails End Restaurant. Filming continued T uesday, Aug. 9, when the finished remodeling project was revealed. Kitty Bartholomew, Homes decorating expert, turned the Kropfs rough, unfinished basement, into the couples dream family room. Bartholomew utilized local labor and materials to create the family room. She used rough cut cedar, adobe and straw for the walls, recessed lighting and emerald green carpeting. She furnished the room with Indian artifacts, a deer rack, local art, Kanab sandstone, willow furniture, and pillows cut from an Indian rug. Public Lands Day Planned for Ariz. Strip ST. GEORGE- - Public Lands Day will be observed next month across the nation. The Day was started several years ago, with the aim of decreasing lit ter by increasing the publics sense of pride and owner ship in lands belonging to all Americans. The public is welcomed and encouraged to enjoy the great outdoor treasures of our country, said G. William Lamb, district the Bureau of Land Managements Arizona Strip Dist- manager of rict. Most people are good stewards of the public lands. They carry out their own trash and freauently pick up litter left behind by those who abuse the land. Occasionally while hiking an isolated area on the Arizona Strip, one may come across illegal The Kropfs said they were amazed at how fast the metamorphosis of their basement was completed. The entire project from start to finish took less than seven days. The entire Kanab production has involved more 100 people, said Public Relations Director Niden. She said about 50 of that number are with ABC. The rest were local people who contributed totHe showlndne capacity or another. Some were involved in the remodeling project, others, helped make the work a little easier for ABC staffers by running errands, fixing a broken computer and providing valuable information. We couldnt have done as easily as we have without the help from the people of Kanab, said Niden. The Kanab shows will air at 10 a.m. on channel four all the week of Aug. 15 to 19. Most residents are anxious to see their hometown and themselves on nationwide television. Others are anticipating the good fortune that may very well come the towns way once the rest of the nation is exposed to the beauty and recreational potential of this little southern Utah town. If any materials looks suspicious, the public is advised not to touch or come into contact with the substance or containers in any way. No. Ariz. Fair Talent Show Set Aug. 25 The annual taient show for the Northern Arizona Fair will be held on Thursday, Aug. 25 at 7 p.m. in the Fredonia Elementary School gym. This has been a favorite part of the fair for many years and will be a worthwhile thing to attend. There are three divisions to enter: Youth (up to and including 11 years old), Junior (12 through 17), and Adult (18 and over). Talent Show Chairman Cheryl Johnson urges and encourages anyone who has talent in any area to enter and participate in the Northern Arizona Fair talent show this year.
