The reality of a golf course coming to Kanab has created interest and excitement throughout the community as well as in other areas of Utah and the west. Last week in an advertising seminar with Bob Welti, local business people exclaimed their happiness with the prospects of a course in . Kanab. Getting the course to its present state has not been easy and Golden Circle Tours, the developer, although pleased with the project, is not happy that it is taking as long as it is. They, along with Kanab City and the golf course committee, has hoped for play earlier than will in reality happen. Many people have been involved in bringing the project to fruition. One such person, who has had some very nice things to say about ? the course is William H. Neff, a golf course architect out of Salt Lake City. He was asked to look over the project and make recommendations by Zions First National Bank. Here are some of the things he said about the course: I must convey my appreciation for the mammoth task undertaken by Golden Circle Tours, Inc., to golf course, develop a nine-hol- e maintenance clubhouse, including -building and maintenance equipment, all for the sum of $453,000. It is indeed a monumental venture for such a sum. I must congratulate Golden Circle for accomplishing so much with their hard working staff. Projects of this sort are in the ij? rrj'h ' Kanab Weather L 5?fc4 A r: , " " 4tnwfisl tint day of Spring, but Monday morning In Kanab and vicinity you might havohad aoma doubts, as this aeon shows. An appeal by Kane County Hospital Administrator Ken Bengson was settled before he could complete his request. Bengson was asking if there was anything the council could do to help with the charges to the hospital on water and sewer services. As he began to tell of his checking of charges at other similar-sizefacilities nearby, Mayor Paul Jenkins interrupted, asking if a minimum water charge and no d sewer fee would be acceptable. A little surprised, pleasantly, Bengson stammered that this would be just One. Feelings of the council are to help support the hospital where feasible. In discussion following acceptance of a disaster emergency declaration involving the Kanab Creek crossing to the Hale Subdivision, it looks like funding might be forthcoming to build a bridge at last. State disaster relief officer Keith Burnett had come down to see the Bob Welti Talks to Chamber Bob Welti, Salt Lake City television personality, met with a small group of Kanab Chamber of Commerce members Saturday evening at a delightful dinner to discuss how to get the best from your advertising money." Welti told the group that in order to get the best value from the advertising dollar one needs to do some research. He said, The place to put your money is where your audience is," and that only comes from some research. As he talks about different advertising mediums, he said that word of mouth is the best there is. Another most important thing he mentioned was cooperation. It will take tremendous cooperation between city, county, chamber, he businesses and individuals, stated. He said that a community cannot afford to have dissensions or friction, If you dont pull together you will fail." When asked about getting Kanab mentioned on the weather more often he reminded the group that they only have a two or three minute show, but said their station has a new computer that they hope will make possible more sectional-ize- d weather reporting. He also said there is a new weather man who will assist him. The new man will be on the air March 31. Welti was excited about the prospects of a golf course in Kanab and said, The golf course will be the first major step in what you are attempting to do." He felt that the setting of the course in Kanab was very good and said with the beautiful red cliffs and green grounds in the foreground would be great advertising on television. Mrs. Welti, who accompanied Bob, mentioned some good advertising in Salt Lake could be when they are having an inversion and all is drab, or when flooding-- to show how nice it is in Kanab-wou- ld do wonders. Welti, as well as being on TV, also owns an advertising agency and he was very complimentary of the color brochure that the Kanab area has, and suggested that it be distributed as much as possible. When it was mentioned that in the past the local travel council brochures could not be distributed by private businesses, he said: Thats loo ng about this far ahead, holding his hand about a foot in front of his eyes. He suggested that they should be distributed by anyone who can. Then a lively discussion ensued concerning local participation and cooperation. Concerning Chamber membership it was mentioned that some feel the Chamber does not do them much good and they dont feel like they can afford the small Chamber dues. Another mentioned that while a public relations job is being considered, maybe we need to do a PR job on ourselves first. Another suggested that Kanab is where St. George was in 1960, we are caught in a negative syndrome, and we need to get out of that. Another good suggestion which Welti liked was to get the temperature on TV with something like: The temperature from the new golf course in Kanab is. . . He said just that little bit of information on the air at the right time would do wonders. Many other suggestions were brought up, but they all seemed to point to complete cooperation, raising needed advertising funds, and spending them in the right place. Welti Concerning advertising, said that Dave Martin, of Martin Doors, who one will see often on TV, told him, Bob, advertising has made my business." Another comment was made concerning the possibilities of development for the Kanab area. Right now we are in a position to move ahead, with a golf course coming, a radio station, two good grocery stores. . . we are headed right." and cooperative atmosphere. In general, I am delighted with the golf course site. The site has a number of beautiful little hills dotted with native juniper trees. The backdrop of red cliffs is truly a pleasing visual experience. If one can visualize the finished product as carpet of green set against the beautiful red formations the impact being similar to what one would visually experience approaching Kanab from the Lake Powell direction. Gorgeous! This site is without question, situated in the most positive location to make a lasting impression on the traveler seeing Kanab for the first time. It tells that traveler in a very beautiful and positive way how proud its citizens are of their community." Mr. Neff went on to make some suggestions on planting of trees, green and tee preparations and fairway distances to help in making the course a delight and challenge. The City and developers had hoped to have the course ready for play early this summer, but problems that are foreseen, but most usually appearing, have brought about delays, but still they are hoping for some kind of play during the 1986 season. Pipe has been delivered and seed has been ordered and it is hoped that weather will cooperate in the next weeks, so that putting in the sprinkling system and planting can come to pass soon. As Bob Welti said during his visit last week, It will be a major step in accomplishing the things you want in this area. Two File For County Seats on Opening Day V fet 'j greatest need for a total teamwork bridge" the day before, after further appeals and inquiries by Mayor Jenkins in Salt Lake City. The crossing had just washed out again, so he could really see the problem. Application has been made for disaster rcief funds through the state community development office. The Department of Transportation must sign off" the application yet, but hopes are high that $100,000 in disaster relief aid will be granted to put in a bridge, completing access and services to this northwest corner of the city Christmas decorations were again discussed by Gene Drake, offering some apologies for not removing all of the lights at the Gazebo. The few active people of the committee just cant always do all the work as quickly as they would like to. Monday, March 17, was the first day for filing with the Kane County Clerk for anyone interested in running for public office in the November elections, and on that day two local hopefuls threw their hats into the ring. Ray Lopeman and Joe Judd each filed their intentions to be candiKane County dates for the four-yea- r Commission position which will be up for election this year. There are several other offices on the county level which will be up for grabs this election. They include one two-yea-r county commission spot and the following offices which are for a four-yea- r term: County Treasurer, County Sheriff, County clerkAuditor, County Recorder and Surveyor, County Attorney, and County Assessor. Also, there will be one Kane School Board member for a four year term from school representative precincts four and five, and the Justice of the Peace office will be open for election to a four-yea- r term. The filing period for these positions is from March 17 to April 15, 1986. Precinct justice of the peace candidates, however, wil have until June 30, and local ant. state school board hopefuls can file until June 25. Those filing for local office must do that at the County Clerks office at the courthouse in Kanab. Drake explained that when volunteer help is given from organizations such as UP&L or Garkane, that it cant always follow a set time or schedule, but that they would endeavor to do better. Help is invited from any individuals who might be able to put up and take down the decorations. He also explained that he and the committee had about $1,300 obligation still left on the latest acquisition of decorations and had been given the impression when they ordered that the city could donate $1,000. Nearly $10,000 has been raised so far in the community effort to add to the festive holiday spirit through lights and decorations downtown. Drake has been a little concerned as his is the name attached to the order. He knew that they would somehow take care of it, but was asking again if the city could help. His last request came at a time when the new councilmen had not yet been over their budgets completely and were not sure what they could offer. Drake realizes that finances are becoming increasingly tighter at the community level and just wanted the council to know that they, the committee, understand. Council was able to fill their original amount requested, much to Drake's pleasure. Three of the Youth City Council were planning to participate in part of the Youth Council Seminar and Workshops at Utah State University at the end of the week. Rosanna Witzke, Andy Compas and Keri Overstreet would not be able to stay the full time due to other commitments, but will attend part of the program. In other items the council addressed and worked out with Leon Corones and his lease and imminent construction of a private hangar at the airport. Approved Donna Casebolt as another new member of the Variety Arts Council.
