Lately its been all the time. Last week at the FFA area contest in Filmore, Dione walked away with second place in the prepared speech event. Kevin, Dane and Dixie went along too, but didnt have the same kind of luck that Dione had. Despite the long trip, they had a good time. They all said lunch was the best part of the ask them. trip. Mmmm- - mm-J- ust Theyll tell ya! Aah, a break from class. Just what we needed were a few of the comments coming from the students Thursday, March 7. A band from SUSC came over to perform for VHS. They played a little bit of everything for us. A former "Valley ite", Rick Cervantez, was a member in the group. We enjoyed watching and listening to him. The Spell school. seventh and eighth grades participated in a spelling bee on Friday, March 8. Although the words that they were to spell were probably a slight bit tougher than school," we know that they did a good job. Competing in the event were 22 class winners from the fourth, fifth and sixth grades. It was apparent that the students were well prepared as the competition went through both the beginning and intermediate word lltst. Five students continued on to the advanced list which included such words as Altruistically, conclnnity" and the winning word covey. Pictured above are the five students who competed on the advanced list, left to right: Heide Hoyt, Andrea Lee, Julie Montano, Angie Brinkerhoff and Tyler Brlnkerhoff. The winner, Angela Brinkerhoff, daughter of Kurt and Vivian Brinkerhoff, Glendale, will go on to compete In the district competition. GOOD SPELLERS Valley Elementary Daze by Judy Lee Dear readers, can you spell scrumptious? licensable? autonomous? There are several fourth, fifth, and sixth grade students at Valley Elementary School who can spell these plus a few hundred others of equivalent difficulty. Those who did especially well in classroom spelling bees comDeted for the title of School Champion Speller. The competition was intense, and the spelling lasted nearly an hour before Angela Brinkerhoff, daughter of Kurt and Vivian Brinkerhoff, was declared the winner. Spelling bees were made popular by Noah Webster, who, believe it or not, did simplify the spellings of several of our words, changing colour to the American color, and favour to favor, as well as other words. I'll bet we could name many other candidates for change, couldn't we, dear readers? Clella Hepworth treasures the memory of winning a spelling bee during the Depression days and receiving a pair of scissors as a prize. Ill never forget the chagrin of missing questionnaire, after previously winning most spelling bees I was in. Congratulations to Angie and all the other contestants. No one with the courage and diligence to try is ever a loser. VALLEY SCHOOLS secretaries, Ida Marie Winter, top and Lenore Hardy provide indispensable support to the community.
