Two days of racing took place and horsemen enjoyed the event. as well as spectators thoroughly Race Meet A Great Success The weekend race meet proved to be an exciting event for the horses, owners, jockeys, and, of course, the fans. Friday, the first day of racing, provided nine winners. In the first race Delinquent Bug was the winner, owned by John Coons, ridden by Jim Sorensen, winning SI 20. Second race winner was Aviator, owned by Black Cedar Ranch, ridden by Val Brinkerhoff and won $120. EMPLOYMENT Navaho Sands was the winner of the third race, owned by Sam and Vivian Crosby, ridden by Bobby Bowler, winning $480.50. The fourth race winner was Circle the Winner, owned by Gary Allred, ridden by Bobby Bowler, and won $320. In the fifth race Swingin Tiny Too was the winner, owned by Jeffy and John Hansen, ridden by Jim Soren OPPORTUNITY Secretarial (Full-timContract). Iron County Dude won the ninth race, owned by Sam Pritchard, ridden by C. Lyman and won $120. Eight races were held Saturday, including the fabled grudge race in the 6th. First winner of the day was Jetadiah, owned by John and Ann Rowley, ridden by C Lyman, won $120. Second race winner was B. 1st Easy owned by Stan Stevens, ridden by Cope, and brought in $120. Our Moose won the third race worth $120, owned by Guff Talbot and ridden by C. Lyman. The fourth race was won by Count Caprious for $120 owned by Rex Williams and ridden by Jim Sorensen. In the 5th Beaus Fancy took first place, winning $603 for the derby; owned by Robinson and Morrill and ridden by Val Brinkerhoff. The 6th race of the day was the famous grudge race. Five horses were entered. They were Miss Slim Jim owned by A.G.&.G. Stables; Tornado Flight, owned by Hud; Sincap owned by Jerry K. Glover; J.W. owned by J.W. Enterprises, and Striker Jack owned Moore. by Ward Gabby Striker Jack took first, winning $450, ridden by Jim Sorensen; followed by Tornado Flight in second place. In the seventh race Bar Star Limits won $120, owned by Don Lay and ridden by Val Brinkerhoff. The eighth and final race of the day and the weekend was won by Minute Duke, owned by Robert L. Carter and ridden by Jim Sorensen, winning ' Pugh reports that the race meet was a complete success and one of the best ever in Kanab. Mr. Pugh would like to extend his thanks to the following people for aU their help: Jerry K. Glover and Ron Glover and their helpers; for stalls and care of horses, Jerry A. Glover and his team; Lyle He borne for judges and jockeys; Robert Houston for ticket sales and raffle and his helpers; Fred Brueck in gathering ads and helping in the booth, along with Earl Prewitt and helpers. Gabby Moore for getting tickets to jockeys. (Incidently, Gabby was the winner of the grudge race); LaDell Alvey for the futurities and the derbies; Gark Swapp, secretary, for ticket sales at track and U.S. Gardner for money; concessions for the Lions Gub; Earl Prewitt in charge of several projects; the horsemen and women, jockeys and the owners. Thanks go to all those who handled gates and including the starter. Last, but not least, thanks especially to the people who came to the race meet, to the city and county for their cooperation and Bob and Nita West; and to the businesses and people who took ads in the program. Duff says if he left anybody out it wasn't intentional and who he thanks everyone helped. The Fredonia Chapter inducted six new members into the National Honor Society on Thursday, May 19, evening. The new members are Regena Heaton, Kim Nelson, Brent Wilson, Cody Spendlove, Corey Cram and Terry Holliday. The ceremony was conducted by Ann Brooksby, and talks were given by Holly Jordan, Tera Heaton, Kathy Bean and Tonya Holliday. Fredonia Library Plans Studied The creation of a Library Building in Fredonia is growing ever closer. According to town clerk Barbara Kimball, 10 contractors have taken plans to study before entering bids on the building. The plans include a full basement under the Library building. Bids will be opened at 8 p.m. and awarded at the June 7th council meeting. Along with the grant for the Library the town 'earned last week that they also have been awarded a grant for equipment for the Library. In a phone call from Sharon G. Womack, Director of Department of Library, Archives and Public Records, Gerk Kimball was informed that Fredonia was selected for funding under Title I, the grant, from These LSCA, is $3,600.00. funds have been budgeted as follows: Bobby Cofield Looking Better Mrs. Wilma Sheppard, Kanab, reports that her grandson Bobby Cofield has had microsurgery to repair damaged nerves from the gunshot wound he received last August in Las Vegas. Bobby has spent many months at the Primary Childrens Hospital fighting infection and undergoing surthis is gery. Wilma says, hopefully the last one". Bobby is the son of Brad and Sandra Cofield. The family is currently living in Kearns, Utah to be near the hospital and Bobbys doctors. The ordeal has been hard on Bobbys twin sister, Becky, but Wilma says they all keep going. Bobby has now had a total of eight surgeries and is in a cast from his chest to both legs. It will come off the end of June. He has kept up with his school work with Beckys help and tutors. He passed to the next grade this spring ana came out with flying colors on his SAT tests. The family recently received a court settlement in Las $255.
