Show SOUTHERN UTAH NEWS - Thursday, May 28, 1981 Papa Six Nearly 12,000 Memorial Day Visitors Bullfrog Marina Sees Photos end story by Loron Webb Working with an isolated area as their biggest problem, the National Park Service handled almost 12,000 people over the Memorial Day weekend at Bullfrog Marina in Glen Canyon National Recreation area in northeastern Kane County. George Phillips, unit manager, National Park Service (NPS) said the Bullfrog Marina usually has five e officers during the spring, summer and fall months of the year but because of a large turnout of people during this holiday, the force has been beefed to nine others from other parks known as the Special Events Team. Because of vast distances between any real towns, the Park Service has to deal with full-tim- several problems. Phillips says his officers act as search and rescuers, Emergency Medical Technicians, scuba divers, mountaineers, direct traffic, operate the concessionaire and act as law enforcement officers, because there is no one else trained and in the area to help. If NPS picks up an alleged lawbreaker, the nearest federally approved jail is in Monticello or Salt Lake City, hundreds of miles away. The county jail is 12 hours away round trip in Kanab and the nearest approved juvenile detention center is in Price and Provo. Part of our problem is that people don't know what goes on down here. Kids think they can come here and get away with things." He said in years past, Bullfrog has become the place for young people to go and bring their alcohol and drugs. The NPS, however, is trying to make this area a safe and fun place for all people to enjoy and yet keep those with drugs and alcohol away from it. Unit Manager George PhilMarianne Patterson are on call veteran 24 hours a day. People seem to think we are Smokey the Bear and that we dont have a law enforcement capability and thats wrong. Female NPS Officer Enjoy 8 Service in Area Beginning as a therapeutic recreation major in college, Jeanie Nuetzel is now a seasonal, and the only female law enforcement officer with the National Park Service at Glen Canyon Recreation area. Beginning her second season at Glen Canyon and her fifth season total, Jeanie will later transfer to Yellowstone National Park and work until November 30, as she has done in the past. Born in Bellville, Illinois, Jeanie got her 1977 bachelors degree in Parks and Recreation, with an emphasis on outdoor recreation at Illinois State University in Normal, 11. Working in a YMCA camp in Eureka, Mo., Jeanie got to work with senior citizens and underprivileged black children. While still a junior in college, she applied to work as a volunteer in the student conservation association in Yellowstone. While completing that assignment, she met a Park Service ranger there and fell in love with him. But thpn went back and finished an internship, applied for an interpreter job with the National Park Service at Yellowstone and was accepted. After becoming involved in that job for a few years, and wanting new challenges, she looked into the law enforcement arm of the service, went to Santa Rosa, California for training and went back to Yellowstone where she interpreted wildlife and was also involved in law enforcement. As a seasonal officer, Jeanie began her duties May 10 at Glen Canyon recreation area. She will work 180 days and then go home and visit her parents and probably travel until the next season begins. One thing bothering her about the recreation area is that no interpretation goes on. "You have to go out and tell people what's happening and even then you're not going to get a big crowd because everyone has gone boating. As for working with male officers, she says Its a darn good thing I've got a sense of humor, because if you didnt you could easily get your feelings hurt.
