After suffering from severe headaches for most of his 42 years. Bob now has "a whole new life. No more continual debilitating pain, no more days of being immobilized. With the medicine he takes four times a day, he had been liberated from the burden of his headache episodes. After being confined to her home for two years by severe a headaches, Cleveland girl is now going back to school, freed of her chronic pain. At a headache clinic in New York, she was put into a deep sleep for over four hours and awoke feeling the first relieve from the pain that had plagued her. With occasional sleep treatments and daily medication, she can manage the headaches and live a normal teenagers life. These two cases out of millions illustrate the progress in treating headaches, one of the most persistent medical problems. The good news is that a great deal of progress has been made in managing various types of chronic headaches, giving the afflicted hope where once the outlook was long bouts of fearful pain. However, despite progress in the last ten years, researchers still don't understand the exact mechanism of the most serious headaches, knowledge that could enable physicians to enterfere with headache syndromes earlier and prevent them in many cases. The stakes are high. Around the world, headaches are more common than the common cold. Almost everyone gets one, sooner or later. Most are mild and transitory, readily treated with aspirin. But in about half the serious cases, the headache develops into an intractable pain that incapacitates the sufferer on a regular basis. In the United States, an estimated 30 million people may frequently get one of the sickening chronic headaches, with many times that number falling prey to the muscle contraction or tension-type- -' headache. The cost of medication, medical care and lost work time is believed to reach as high as $4 billion a year! In the face of this problem, headache clinics and researchers are delving into basic cell functions and body chemicals, charting the intricacies of blood flow to the brain, and probing for the ways some internal and external factors affect the bodys involuntary nervous system. The toughest headaches to endure are the migraine and cluster varieties. Dr. Mark Green, former director of the famed Monefiore Hospital Headache Clinic in New York, believes that as much as five percent of the U.S. population may suffer from migraine attacks, 90 percent of them women. Cluster headaches afflict only a fraction of headache sufferers and strike men, mostly. The pain typically lasts for 20 minutes to 2 hours and disappears, only to perhaps ten more times during the day. The syndrome can continue for weeks and even months and then not reappear for years. The most common type of serious headache, Dr. Green notes, is the muscle contraction or tension headache. It can be a dull, steady pain like a steel band ever tightening around the head. Researchers tell us there are many possible origins for this headache, including fatigue, illness, dental problems, nervous tensions, and muscle strains around the neck and shoulders that radiate to the scalp muscles. One of the commonly accepted theories of the action of such headaches runs this way: Visit Library Are you interested in records and facts. Dr. Coddon would agree, but thinks more research is needed to know exactly which blood vessels are involved. For children under 15, Doctors Coddon and Green use mild medications (such as aspirin) along with biofeedback, a method which helps the patient control the bodys involuntary nervous system. It treatis a safe, ment. Dr. Alfred Aronson, Director of Medical Affairs for Pfizer Pharmaceuticals and a clinical professor at Yale Universitys Medical School, also favors biofeedback and even meditation to relieve tensions and headaches. Headache specialists agree that more research is needed because, as Dr. Coddon notes, we are seeing more and more headaches these days." Dr. Green adds that research should aim at understanding the biochemical, psychological and pharmacological links in headaches. On one hand. Dr.. Dr. David R. Coddon, director and founder (in 1971) of New Yorks Mount Sinai Hospital Headache Ginic, believes in treating some acute migraine attacks with sleep therapy on the oberva-tiothat sleep is natures way of handling the problem. If the attack has already begun and the patient is wracked with pain, he uses a three-stag- e injection, often called to put "Coddon's Cocktail, the patient into a deep sleep for four to six hours. Upon awakening, he reports, the patient is normally .free of pain. Some doctors have patients breathe from a tank containing 100 percent oxygen; this may be effective in a severe headache. The oxygen factor and the still ambiguous roles played by prostaglandins (body chemicals) and such as propranolol (which interfere with nerve receptors) are some of the more intriguing and promising leads in current headache research. Doctors Greene, Coddon and others are cautious in their remarks about the mechanisms of migraine and cluster headaches. Dr. Greene it FOR SALE F26-M26- Interested In Records, Facts: For a number of possible reasons, blood components called platelets begin to collect in the blood vessels of the head. These platelets break down, and prostaglandins formed by this cause the arteries to constrict. Soon a chemical in the platelets called serotonin is released and then induces the arteries to expand. It is this drastic dilation that is thought to cause painful pressure and push the vessel walls against the many sensitive nerves in the head. Aspirin and other drug products act to contract blood vessels again, moderating the inflammation and reducing the pain of mild headaches. For the most severe headaches, the drug used for many years was ergot, a fungus derivative which narrows the swollen blood vessels. But ergot can cause unpleasant side effects. Within the past few years, the drug of choice has become propranolol, which was origianlly developed for patients with heart ailments or high blood pressure. It is more effective and safer than ergot and can be used for long periods of time. Besides easing headache attacks, it can prevent or moderate such attacks when amounts taken in small several times a day, every day. Many researchers de Duplex in Fredonia.
