Yet this is the figure used in a report recently from the states division of wildlife resources. This should be reason for concern not only on the part of the Beehive states hunting community, but all citizens. We all have a stake in the preservation and management of wildlife. Sportsmen especially can help to stem the tide of poaching which division officials describe as big business when done on a commercial basis. Because they are perhaps more often in the field when such activities are taking place, sportsmen have more opportunity to see it being done, or to find evidence of it. THE RESPONSE should be to contact the nearest DWR office or officer and provide every bit of information possible that may lead to apprehension of the culprits. Of course, poaching may be reported to any law enforcement agency. Get a license plate number if you can and the number of persons involved in the incident. Public awareness can be a strong deterrent to this illegal activity. Two years ago, the DWR's northern region initiated a campaign to encourage the public to report wildlife violations. And today 80 to 85 percent of the arrests made for poaching in the region come from the public notifying the division, according to Paul Woodbury, regional law enforcement officer. OF COURSE, TIMING is important. If the incident is six weeks old, for example, it is difficult to make a case. The division has a reward program for information leading to the arrest and conviction of poachers. Yet, it seems to us that the satisfaction of helping to bring such criminal louts to justice ought to be reward enough in itself. As stated, all Utahns have a stake in the preservation and management of wildlife, a responsibility to make sure that generations to come will have this natural resource to enjoy. Lloyd. Titled Intentions of Utah's High School Graduates" the survey polls the states graduating seniors annually to determine their intentions for school activities. Of post-higthose polled in 1980, more than 67 percent voiced their intention to enter some form of post high school education program. Ten years ago, the figure was much higher. Eighty-thre- e percent of the 1970 graduating seniors planned to continue their formal education. As for those who opted entrance into a college or university, only 55 percent of the 1980 class chose this alternative while nearly 70 percent of the 1970 group was college bound. school eduOther post-hig- h cation alternatives included vocational and business or professional schools. The percentages of those intending to enter those programs has also declined during the period. For instance, in 1970, 8.5 percent of the graduating seniors planned on entering a vocational school. In 1980 the percentage of those declaring the same option had dropped to 7.8. As for business schools, the drop was even more dramatic. Here, the 1970 figure stood at 3.8 percent. This last spring only 1.5 percent wanted to attend a business school. Perhaps the most dramatic statistic to surface from the data collected by the survey is the number of students who wish to enter directly into the labor force upon graduation from high school. This year 21 percent said they hoped to get a permanent job immediately after graduation. In 1970, only e 12 percent felt that was choice the to employment make after graduation. Another factor to come out of the data harvested during the research is the number of students who have earmarked other" (other than training or military) as their choice for school activity. post-higWhatever other means to the students, it has increased from 2.6 percent in 1970 to 10.6 percent in 1980. In all h reinstatement requests have been returned by people throughout the county. From the Fredonia area 15 reinstatement requests have been received. 79 people were cancelled in the area. "We did a phone survey of cancelled voters to remind them to return the card and to ask why they didn't vote," said Mrs. Hudgens. Based on this sample, 61 of the people were no longer living at the address on their voter registration. If this figure is valid, we can only expect to get about 2,700 explained the Notices were sent to cancelled voters before February 1st. People have until April 1st to send the request back to the Recorder's office to have their vote registration reinstated. If the request is not returned by April 1st, cancelled voters will have to in person. You can with a deputy registrar, at the Flagstaff Public Library, or in the Recorders office in the Courthouse. LETTERS TO Two Burglaries Marlin Brown Most people are pretty well adept at patting themselves on the back, and in the newspaper field there is not much exception to that rule. Once each year newspaper people in Utah gather at a convention in Salt Lake City and do a little of that. This writer cant say too much about it because it has been around eight years since he has attended one of the conventions. (Cant seem to make enough money to get out of town.) The conventions are always fun (when we do attend.) There are experts who discuss photography, cutlines, headlines, typography, page makeup, creative writing, ad layout, and so forth. Special speakers from the industry often talk about Freedom of the Press," Impartial Journalism, and other such subjects, which all publishers are completely in agreement with. Many of the publishers especially like the attitude adjustment hour (thats a sophisticated name for a cocktail party.) Thats where fellow publishers talk with each other (those who can still talk) about various problems ranging from equipment changes and problems to sports activities. To some, the real big affair comes on Sunday at noon when the awards banquet is held and various awards are handed out. There are three categories of newspaper, according to circulation. The Southern Utah News . has generally been in Group I . (circulation under 1700 I believe). Over the years (or perhaps I should say several years ago) we have entered various aspects of the contest but were not too much on awards, and like I said we cant seem to make enough money for a weekend in Salt Lake City, so we havent entered very often in recent years. (We did win a share of certificates when we did enter.) This year we did enter an editorial in the Best Editorial contest. We received a notice that says (apparently) that we won 2nd place in the Group I section with a nice comment from the judge; also a note that indicates we won something for Best Front Page in Group II, but dont know what place it was -probably an Honorable Mention. (Havent received the certificates yet) guess thats what we get for not attending the convention.) Every year lately we have decided to go to the convention and then the last minute something comes that precludes our going.
