The Buffaloes had posted a foad win over Kanab early in the season, but with a full house looking on in Beaver gymnasium, the Cowboys evened the record with a championship victory. It was an exciting, evenly played contest throughout with Kanab gaining an edge in the last few critical seconds. No one was really surprised The two at the match-up- . clubs had been power houses throughout the season as they had battled to win the top spot in each of their respective divisions. (Kanab shared the Division 1 crown with Gunnison). Each team was led by one of the top two players in 71-6- 6 classification the Wayne Jones carrying the standard for the orange and black, and Gary Glover playing his last region tournament for the red and white clad rugged Piute squad Cowboys. But anyone who thought that the championship action would be simply a affair were grossly mistaken. Scott Robertson, Kelepi Fi- two-ma- 54-4- 9 after trailing for much of the game. The Thunderbirds rode the hot hand of Kennedy first Sylvester to a quarter advantage and then stretched the margin to at intermission. 14-1- 2 n 30-2- 4 seemed secure against the hard rebounding Bobcats. Jones played his usual rugged game on the boards and displayed his deft touch in the middle while Scott Crofts hit one hanging jump shop after another near the foul line, but Panguitch continued to battle back. A final Bobcat surge, coupled with some inopportune Valley turnovers pushed Panguitch into a last second lead, but the Buffaloes forced a tie and then played tough defense to move the game into overtime. Wayne Jones wasted no time in proving his value as he drove inside for a short jumper and drew the foul to give lead. The Valley a Bobcats hit some key baskets in the extra period, but Valley refused to give away their shot at the championship as Shane and Tony Esplin hit 6 clutch free thrown to ice the win. final was The Kanab-Valle- Scott Robertson scored 8 second quarter points to keep Kanab close and then the Cowboys took the game back in the second half. When the gymnasium lights flickered out with 2:51 remaining on the clock the Thunder-bird- s championship hopes went out with them. Piute was never able to get closer than the final margin. Gary Glover led all scorers with 21 while Wayne Mickelson and Scott Robertson had 10 each for the winners. Sylvester and Jensen led the Piute scoring with 15 and 14 points respectively. Valley had an even tougher time as they met the red hot Panguitch Bobcats and played through one overtime before win. The pulling out a Buffaloes seemed to have a slight edge throughout the evening, but nothing ever y one of the best in recent years. It was a fitting showcase for the talents of both fine teams. The Buffaloes were determined to keep the ball away from Glover inside as they kept him sandwiched between two players throughout the first quarter. Kanab showed they had a lot more scoring punch, however, as Scott Robertson and Kelepi Finau combined for 12 early points. The Buffaloes spread their scoring out among all five starters to keep things close. The crowd was well aware how important the big men were to each team and cries of dismay and disgust were evident as both Jones and Glover were whistled for early fouls under the offensive and defensive boards. Both Glover and Jones went to work in the second quarter as Glover came outside to take passes and hit soft jumpers from the side of the key. Jones, on the other hand, seemed almost impossible to stop as he would wheel inside and bank the ball deftly off the glass. The Cowboys held a first quarter lead, but when Jones retired to the bench midway in the second period with his third personal the Buffaloes came fighting back. Tony Esplin hit an early offense jumper and Andy Crofts did a job both inside and outside to knot the score at 28 all at halftime. Wayne Mickelson and Doug Mousaw continued to key the Kanab offense as they moved the ball smoothly looking for the open man. And the man they often found in the third quarter was the sophomore, Scott Robertson, who kept the nets sizzling on successive trips down the d IULU v MB m. It seemed Kanab might win fairly easily, but in the final three minutes the Buffaloes forged a patented comeback. Aided by Kanab miscues and the hot hand of Andy Crofts, Valley pulled within one on an inside power move by Jones which resulted in a play. Following another Kanab turnover, the Buffaloes moved in front by one with less than two minutes remaining. The momentum seemed to have swung when Valley regained possession and Tony Esplin was fouled. Esplin canned his first free throw, but missed his second to give lead. The the Buffs a Cowboys quickly knotted the count, however, on a short baseline jump shot by Finau, and then moved in front by one on a Glover free throw. This set up what may have been the most important piece of action in the contest. A missed Valley shot resulted in a Kanab possession with time running out. The Cowboys worked the ball around until Glover went up with a 10 foot jump shot. The shot was short off the front rim, but Glover ripped away his own rebound and muscled in the shot as Jones collected his fifth personal foul. The foul pitch gave Kanab a lead which they would not relinquish enroute to their second consecutive Region 12 championship. 2 Scoring MIX jp $ 2B9 Ida Treat. . 2 Lb Pkg HASH BROWNS 1 Oz Bonus Pack 4 Ounces Free 3 GREEN ONIONS OR RADISHES CRISP LETTUCE CEREAL 2 AT bun ti M Rhodes, Pkg of 5.
