Bell Telephone Co., for installation of phones, with quotations ranging from $1500 to $5400. Quotations received amount to over $80,000.00. In 1973 telephone lines were installed serving the 30 lots east of Kanab Creek at no cost to the subscribers. In January, 1976, telephones were installed in a 193 lot area, west of the creek, at a construction cost of $100.00 per home. Since that time, the number of homes has considerably increased, and there are presently 51 homes without phones. The KCR Home Owners Association had appealed to the Committee of Consumer Services to assist them with their problem. With the backing of Governor Mathe-sothe 1977 State Legislature Comcreated a mittee of Consumer Services to represent electric, natural gas, and telephone consumers. As Mr. Ingles explained to the home owners, the Committee acts as an attorney senting their case to the Public Service Commission. The Committee of Consumer Services met on February 24 at which time Mr. Ingles provided the members with the information obtained from the KCR Home Owners. Since Mr. Ingles visit, the Kane County Commission has indicated their willingness to meet with the KCR Home Owners, and a meeting has been scheduled for March 21. Escalante Hiking Can Give Problems Warm days that are inspiring hikers to think of the ruggedly beautiful Escalante River are creating difficult conditions for hiking there, according to Craig Zufelt, BLM Escalante Area Manag- er. The warming temperatures are causing runoff that makes the water high, forceful and muddy. The air temperature is warm but the water is very cold. Since wading is often necessary, travel is difficult and extremely uncomfortable, Zufelt cautioned. In addition, access is a problem because the roads are before the Public Service rough and muddy.
