This is a significant increase over the $77.9 million spent last year and the $65.5 million spent in 1976, Lindblom noted. He explained that more than half of each year's construction budget generally goes for growth requirements such as new cable and the expansion of various telephone company offices around the state in order to provide basic telephone service. We must borrow from the nations money markets to obtain the funds necessary to construct many of these new facilities," he said. This is why it is so important that our company be financially heal- (Continued on Page 3) wests largest bass fishing tournaments. It attracted top bass fishermen from all over the United States. Some of the bass pros" praised Lake Powell for its excellent bass fishing. According to Ted Gardiner, Utah Division of Wildlife Resources conservation officer, the overall fishing patterns of the lake specify the months between October and June as being best for hooking into the variety of Lake Powell fish. Although angling is popular year round, the hot months of July and August are least productive. However, catches reported recently at the Wahweap Marina indicate good spring fishing is just getting underway. Bass, the most popular game species in Lake Powell, are just starting to show up in good numbers by fishermen knowing the right areas to fish and using the correct methods. Depending on the time of year and the weather conditions, bass are more often found on underw ater ledges of rock and sunken islands. Rock slides provide excellent feeding grounds for the bigger bass, as does underwater vegetation (trees and brush). Spring and late fall fishing produce good bass on artificial luris, but the best overall enticement comes from live waterdogs. Most fish in the lake will take the waterdog, if it is fished correctly. When using the waterdog as bait, tie a No. 3 or No. 4 hook on the line and attach a split shot (eighth or quarter ounce) 12 to 18 inches above the hook. Cast out toward the rockslide or ledge being fished and let the waterdog sink to the bottom. sional District. Ferguson called for a return Too to reality and stated, many programs cost far more than they provide. Many are e unworkable, and unrealistic. The burden placed on the taxpayer in excessive taxes, inflation and high interest rates caused by the outrageous spending on the federal level, is ludicrous. Rainbow trout are the second ranked contender in Lake Powell with the lake record being a catch of 16 lbs. 8 ozs. This big one was caught last year by Jim Lawless of Page, Arizona. The average weight of the rainbows is three to six pounds. Woolly-wor- flies and the combination have proven to be the best bait for trout. Big trout move in along the graveled shoreline in Wahweap Bay to spawn in February and generally stay through April. Now is a good time to hook into one of these big trout. Other fish included in the wide variety in Lake Powell are the walleye pike, crappie, bluegill, channel catfish and the newest species just introduced, the striped bass. Recent gill net checks indicate walleyes are increasing in numbers each year making them one of the more numerous species in Lake Powell. This species averages from two to four pounds but walleye up to twelve pounds have shown up in gill nets. Not many walleye are caught, largely because fishermen usually do not fish specifically lures for them. Minnow-typ- e and large jigs used early and late in the day or even at night should produce some good catches of walleye. Each year since 1974, the Division of Wildlife Resources has stocked the popular striped bass in Lake Powell. This fish is a coastal salt water fish but through studies and introduction into fresh water lakes biologists have found that these fish do very well, often growing to enormous sizes. The largest stripe taken (Continued on Page 2) Boosters Club Will Sponsor Zogi Revue9 The Kanab Booster Gub this week received a distinguished visitor, Mr. C.A. Frank, owner and manager of the C.A. Mr. Frank, whose office has handled many smash hit theatrical productions, consiThe Zogi Variety ders so important and Revue unusual that he has personally taken over the management of the tour.
