Fifty were in attendance. After reading your Column and Letters to the Editor last week I feel that I must pen a reply. The thing that bothers me is that these Environmentalists exaggerate things so badly that its hard to reach a rational conclusion. For instance your paper last week gave the impression that Power Generating Plants are the main cause of the smog in the Los Angeles area. This is not true! This area had smog problems long before there was ever an electric light, a belching factory, a jet plane or automobiles. The Indians called it The Valley of Smoke because when they burned their cornfields, the wind off the ocean would back the smoke up against the surrounding High Sierra Mountains until it covered the entire area. We dont burn cornfields any more, but we have something that makes much more smoke. In fact, each family has two and sometimes three of these smoke makers. When you think there are some where around seven million people down here, thats a lot of smoke makers, or automobiles if you prefer. Now of course, the smoke makers must be able to go 150 mph, so we need at least 400 horse power. This way they can gobble up all of the oxygen and spew it out as carbon monoxide and nitrous oxides, and whatever else it is they spew out. Dont forget we have factories and refineries everywhere you look. Most of these can be called smoke makers. In fact some can be called super smoke makers.
