Stanford University students, Bob Marks and Pete Eltgroth were accompanied by their wives on a recent wilderness sidetrip through the Paria Canyon Primitive Area. The adventurous four could have well made the first expedition through the lower Buckskin according to Fred P. " Howard, Kanab BLM District Manager. The California four entered the Paria Canyon Primitive Area south of US 89 at Wire Pass on Tuesday, May 11 and emerged at Lees Ferry Saturday evening. The overall challenging hike colorful through canyon bottoms covered over fifty miles. In commenting on the formidable Dave, Marks insisted that those who follow be in top physical condition. At several points, the four reportedly utilized nylon rope to rappel down over rock jams to the next lower level of the canyon floor. Marks indicated that subsequent parties through the dark, cavehke Dive should hopefully bring faster color film than his group carried. Activities will be held both Friday and Saturday, May 21 and 22. Beginning the festivities will be a parade which will begin at 2 p.m. in front of the Kanab High School. Please note the CHANGE in the time for the parade. The Ropes are recommended for safety by BLM in passing through Kane Countys water-erodetwisting labyrinth of Navajo sandstone. Howard requested that all parties entering the shoulderwide canyonland register in and out with BLM. Violent summer flooding periodically creates and then eliminates log and rock jams at the bottom of the geologically constricted passage. Parties of at least three participants are d recommended for safe crossing through unstable mudflow stretches. rope-secure- The Dive offers unparalledel adventure for physically conditioned individuals willing to accept some hardship, stated Howard. Once a downstream hike is undertaken, there is no known exit from the Dive except at its confluence with the Paria, he added. The Stanford foursome took two days passing through the Dive. The Paria River plus Buckskin-Wir- e Pass tributaries of the west of Lake Powell offer varying levels of recreation throughout the entire year. The canyonways must be avoided due to hazardous flooding in the thunderstorm season BLM cautions. During the winter months when cold weather precludes wading within the Paria itself, Utahs western sidecanyons also provide unique sightseeing and hiking opportunities.
