President Eisenhower encourages the reduction by Congress of his own budget- - except in the essentials of U. S. security and world peace." To say that it is difficult to male substantial cuts in the budget is to say the obvious. But to soy that such cuts cannot be made is to fly in the face of all the available evidence- - - including the exhaustive and invaluable reports of the Second Hoover Commission. And these cuts would in no way affect the national defense or any other essential activity. The prime problem lies in the sad fact that everyone wants Accordeconomy - so long as it affects the other fellow only. more ing to Mr. Hoover there are, incredible as it may seem, than 1,000 arrive pressure groups in Washington seeking liigher federal spending for one purpose or another - as against exactly two which are working to reduce expenses! The budget is a reflection of this situation. The Oregonian suggests that the administration and Conmore closely than heretofore in whittling gress can away at unnecessary expenditures attributable to inefficency, bureaucracy and empire building. Unless tills is done, and done now there is every prospect of more inflation and an acceleration in the rate of inflation. And that, as Secretary Humphrey vis idly points out, could lead to a depression that would curl your hair." -- te Handwriting On The Wall News stories of Feb. 8, from Seattle, reported that rank and-fil- e members of a Teamsters Union had gone to court seeking an audit, accounting and examination of all books and records of their local union The presiding judge ordered local officials to show cause why they should not produce the records. Under the union shop system in the United State a man cannot work over 30 days in principal basic industries without joining a union or being fired. In other words, in a free" country he is forced to join and pay dues or starve he has no choice. It seems incredible Chat in a free" country a labor union can force men to join or not work, and then refuse to make a public accounting of the millions it collects by compulsory dues. Is it any wonder that demand is growing for Right to Work laws and that 17 states have already passed such laws which allow a man to join or not join a union as he voluntarily decides - a basic right unless freedom is a myth in our country. Apparently Right to Work" laws are the only way men can free themselves from depredations of union bosses who manip-lat- e compulsory dues as they see fit. He expressed confidence that reductions can be made in the next 18 months.
