No money as yet has been authorized for developing the area as a railhead, but we can expect funds once local engineering is completed, an offical said. The amount of tracks to be laid in the area will depend on the demand of supplies coming to Flagstaff for use on the Glen Canyon Dam. Bureau of Reclamation officials have declared that Flagstaff will be the railhead for supplies to be used in construction of a $4 million bridge below the site of the proposed $421 million dam. Selection of a townsite by the government bureau is still pending. Should this site be selected on the east side of the river, Flagstaff undoubtedly . will ... become the railhead for most of the supplies to be used in the dam. A contract for the bridge already has been let and bids for the dam will be opened Feb. 28 at Kanab, Utah. Supplies from Flagstaff will be trucked to the dam site over U.S, 89 to bitter springs and then over a new highway now under con struction. The Bitter Springs road is being constructed with funds obtained from the state and the Reclamation Bureau. Contracts $2,168,044 totaling have been let for this work. In addition, a new bridge over the little Colorado River at Cameron will be built next summer. Santa Fe officias said the 105 acres acquired by the railroad will be taxed to capacity if the townsite is located on the Flag staff side of the river. Beginning at 12:01 a.m., Sunday March 3, 1957, when the residents of Kanab lift their receivers to place calls, they will no longer turn the familiar crank to signal the operator. The school will convene at the Court House in Kanab. Utah, at 9:00 a.m. on April 24, 1957. Classroom subjects scheduled for April 24 and 25, 1957, include courses in Note Taking, Collecand Presertion, Identification vation of 'Evidence, Auto Theft Investigations, FBI Laboratory and Aids to the Investigator Homicide Investigations. In addition, instruction will be given in double action and single action revolver shooting as well as intensive courses in disarming methods and defensive tactics of ofvalue to law enforcement ficers. Mr. Ken Chamberlain, District Attorney, will lecture to the 1:30 p.m. on April 24, group 1957, on the subject of Utah State Laws of Arrest The school is sponsored by Sheriff Johnson who extends an invitation to all law enforcement officers to be in attendance. it - - Delegation Goes To Salt Lake On South Highway Route The Cedar City Chamber of Commerce in cooperation with other interested groups in southern Utah will send a delegation to the state capitol in Salt Lake City Tuesday, Feb. 2Tflo meet with Governor George D. Clyde and the State Road Commission for the purpose of discussing proposed access roads to the Glen Canyon Dam. Many are the times that the local operators on duty have been of invaluable assistance in locating a resident for both local and incomng calls, as well as helping to find strangers and others here who were being sought by someone through a long distance call, or message. Kar.3 Hospital Will Have Ambulance Now According to Taylor Crosby, manager of the Kane County hospital, arrangements have been made at the hospital for ambulance service. Except for a sharp rise in new residences in recent months, the population in Kanab has remained approximately the same for the past twenty years. Telephone Activity Telephones crews have become a familiar sight to the people of this ' Southern Utah community. In recent months, construction crews have completed laying an eight mile underground cable to serve subscribers In FYedonia, Arizona. The cost of this project alone was $39,000.00. In October 1956, an 80 mile telephone line was constructed over the rugged terrain to the Glen Canyon Dam site. This was necessary to provide the Bureau of Reclamation and contractors with telephone service in that remote area. Over 85 per cent of Utahs telephones will be dial operated with the conversion of the phones in Kanab and Fredonia, Arizona, according to Mr. Bradshaw All telephones numbers In the area will be changed for use with the new system. Numbers in Kanab will contain a prefix name of Midway 4, followed by for The numerals. prefix phones users in Fredonia, Art zona, will be Midway 3.
