Larry Shurtliff First the lady Thunderbirds will test the perennially strong University of Montana tonight at 7:30 p. m. i.n Missoula and tomorrow SUU will tangle with Montana State in Bozeman. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m. "Both of these teams are strong, and we'll need to play our best to win," said SUU Coach Larry Shurtliff. "Monmna has a great women's basketball tradition, and the ream us off to another great start this year. We probably have a slightly betll'r chance to win at Monmna State than at Montana." SUU will take a 6-10 record into the Montana contest after dropping a tough 77-65 decision at home to lJfEP in ici last outing. Despite losing in iu last two games, Shurtliff is positive about the way his ream is playing. "We are significantly improved over last season. We are on schedule to win l Oor more games, and we could double our win tom! from last year/ said Shurtliff. "Our players are working very hard and giving a total effort. That's really all I can ask." The Thunderbirds are led in both scoring and rebounding by Cherri Shurtliff. She comes off the bench ro average 11.4 points and 6.5 boards. Forward Becky Schofield is second in both categories with a 10.7 scoring average to go with 5.4 rebounds per contest Also in double-figure scoring with an even l 0 poinn; per contest is Angie Alvey. She is the team's leader in assist with 4. l per game. Hamblin, Shaw lead SU Tracksters now prepare for Cosby Invite SUU Track Coach Eric Houle was looking for continued improvement over his team's performance at last week's Utah Smte University lnvimtional this week at the Northern Arizona University Invitational Saturday at Flagstaff, Az. Several members of his team stepped up and put forth fine outings. Gary Hamblin wa:; clocked at 1 :57 .69 in the 800 meter run which put him in third place behind two runners from Cal State University Northridge. Teammate Bryce Anderson finished eighth with a time of 2:01.52. In the 200 meters, Matt Basham finished fourth with a 23.08, while Todd Hardy finished sixth with a 24.14. In the 3,000 me.ter run Phil Woolston led the Thunderbirds with a 9:27.l finish. For the lady Thunderbirds, Kristen Shaw placed fourth in the 800 meters with the time of2.Z5.21. In the ZOO meters, Denise Boyer finished 10th with a 27.98. In the 3,000 meters, Anna Pett was timed at 11 :54.4 for a fourth place flnish. Final resulci in the long jump placed Brenda Foy and Denise Boyer in sixth and seventh places, respectivley, with jump of 147 3/4 and 14-6 3/4. In the 400 meters, Boyer finished fourth with the time of 1:02.52. After three meets in as many weekends, Southern Utah will have a couple of week off to prepare for the Bill Cosby Invitational Feb. 13 at Reno, Nev.
