Show Disabled reach their goals BY RHIANNON BENT SENIOR STAFF WRITER Disability Awareness Week, April 9-12. provides a time for SUU faculty , staff and students to educate themselves about the disabled . Carmen Alldredge, coord inator of student disabilities service, said the week helps pe~e realize that the disabled are able to succeed and reach their goals. The Disability Support Center currently accommodates 156 students. A variety of activities have been scheduled to promote the theme "Think Ability ." "The focus is education about what we do [In Student Support Services] and the meaning of disability," Alldredge said . Jennie Segler, a sophomore elemE;!ntary and special education major ~rom Las Vegas and one of Alldredge's assistants. said the week also shows other students what SUU has to offer · those with learning disabilities. · · "The week is to show that those with disabilities don't let them control their lives." Today's activity is a disability obstacle course on the lower quad or Kolob Living Room, weather permitting , from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Alldredge said students can experience what it's like to have dyslexia, be blind or be in a wheelchair. Tomorrow is a collection of five films ~1 A \.i W A S ~I E A N T PAGES UNIVERSITY JOURNAL CAMPUS NEWS !MONDAY, APRIL 9 , 1001 that will be shown every hour starting at 4 p.m. in the Sharwan Smith Cen_ter Theatre. Each film features ·celebrities with disabilities and how they overcame them. • One of the films, Without Barriers or Borders, is narrated by Marlee Matlin and focuses on- the technology created to help those with disabilities. ·Three disabled faculty members and three disabled SUU students will .gather for a panel on Wednesday. Alldredge said they will share their experiences about what they did to get where they are and answer questions from the audience. "The purpose of the panel is to show students how much potential they have to ·reach their goals," she said. The week's activities w ill close on Thursday with the 'Light Motionn Dance Company Convocation at 11 :30 a.m. in the Randall L. Jones Theatre. Light Motion ':Nas established in 1988 to develop the artistic expression of disabled ·and non-disabled artists. Alldredge said the national Disabilities Awareness Week is during the fall . but since.other universities have their weeks in April. SUU does as well. She said she'd like to see SUU's week coincide with the national week next fall. Alldredge said she wanted to thank the faculty and staff for their help working with students with ·disabilities and let students know there are always opportunities to help the disabled.
