USM's Angela Johnson hit two free throws with four seconds remaining in the game to clinch the win for the Lady Eagles. SUU \}'as trailing 66-64 as the Eagles brought the ball down the court. After a tough defensive stand by the 'Birds, SUU called a time out and the "picket fence· play was called for Woolston. After the time out, Woolston used the pick set by Julie Bellamy, leaving her open from 15 feet. "I really thought it was going in," said SUlJ head coach Joe Hillock. "She had been hitting everything all night. · Woolston led the 'Birds with a careerhigh tying 27 points while also pulling in eight rebounds. She shot eight-of-15 from the field including three-for-five from three-point land . Woolston and Lindsay Hille, who scored eight points and had five rebounds against USM, were named to the All-Tournament team . "They played exceptionally well the whole tournament," said Hillock. Hillock said that he was also happy with the play of entire team . The starters are playing well and the depth of the team is impressive . Sarah Mortensen finished with nine rebounds and four points while Bellamy put in eight points and grabbed six rebounds. "I am very excited where we are now," said Hillock. "For our second game, with no exhibition games, we played great against a good team on its own court." • SUU advanced to the final game with an easy 71-27 victory over Delaware State on Friday. Hille sco·red a gamehigh 17 points and Woolston and Beverly Glover added 11 points each. Hillock said the players looked sloppy at times, shooting 44 percent from the field in the first half and turning over the ball 30 times during the game, but that was because it was the team's first game. . SUU out-rebounded Delaware State 46-21 in the game, with Sally Johnson leading the team with eight boards. SUU also blocked seven shots, four by Mortensen, and recorded 15 steals. The Lady T-Birds play their first home game of the season tomorrow night against Moun;ain West Conference foe Air Force at 7:35 p.m, at the Centrum Arena. The Thunderbirds won their firstever meeting with the Falcons. a 79-70 season-opening triumph last year in Colorado Springs. The 'team will then play in the St. Mary's Thanksgiving Classic Friday and Saturday at Moraga , Calif. , before returning home to face BYU on Nov. 28. |
