Show , I .. jPAGE1l MONDAY, NOVEMBER 20, 2000 UNIVERSITY JOURNAL ARTS Shapiro, Smith offer variety in SUU dance performance BY ASHLEY ADAMS JOURNAL ARTS EDITOR Tuesday night a little taste of the big apple was brought to the spotlight of the Randall L Jones Theatre with the Shapiro and Smith Dance Company . Based in Minneapolis, they performed for students and community members as a part of the CCMA concert series. The Shapiro and Smith modern dance • company was founded in 1987. They have received positive reviews worldwide in their 15 years of working together. Producers and choreographers, Dan Shapiro and Joanie Smith welcomed the audience with introduction and insight behind each of the four diverse pieces performed . The fjrst piece was titled "Last Day Before Autumn" by Rachmaninoff. The title creates the idea that the dancers are always on the verge of something happening . There were no props or words used to interpret this theme, only the soft flowing melody created by a cello and piano. The second piece was dubbed "Wee Violence.· Although fictional , the theme originated from a personal experience. The story ventured from the idea of a woman on the ninth story of a building. The woman saw an open window with a balcony and was frightened with the idea of her baby falling to the city streets below. Smith's dancing was incorporated with a narrative voice. The narration often jumped from one topic to the next, creating the confusion of a dream-like mentality. Tones changed dramatically with the next piece, "To Have and to Hold." It was choreograhed somewhat in the memory of friends and family. After spending a year abroad , Shapiro and Smith discovered that a the lives of those at home had changed. The theme dealt with the idea of learning to let go of the past and sometimes say goodbye. It was expressed through images of marriage, reunions, love and death. Often the music changed to promote each of these ideas. Defining a shtick was the last piece and seemed to create the largest audience reaction. Shapiro described shitck as a bit, a piece, or a wornout routine or gimmick. "It's your thing that you do when it's time, or often past time to go or to change," Smith said. "Shtick" seemed to create the most appeal for audience members, through humor and nonsense. Colorful costuming, a variety of dance routines and repetitive joke telling gave the audience a sense of the catskills of the 1940s and 1950s. A variety of dance companies from around the world have used Shapiro and Smith's dances. They are unique and . original in format and interpretation.
