Show !PAGE 10 MONDAY, NOVEMBER 20, 2000 UNIVERSITY JOURNAL OPINION LETTERS Tuition is too high TO THE ~DITOR: I read the University Journal a few weeks ago. According to the SUU administration . SUU is considering the second tuition approval to raise tuition 3 .6 percent , Weber State University's current tuition rate if approved. When is tuition going to start increasing? SUU already increased tuition in the fall semester 2000, but it is going to increase tuition again at this point. I'm not a resident here, so I always pay around $3 ,300 for tuition. except summer semester. We pay too much tuition and increase percent tuition, I want to cry, "Keep tuition down.• Hundreds of college students from across the state converged at WSU in an attempt to thwart a douQle-digit tuition hike being considered by the Board of Regents . Did SUU students know about that? I think that SUU studen~s would join the discussion. During the past 12 years, SUU had a 6.9 percent average tuition increase each year ; however, the average for the last five years is only 3 .06 percent. Tuition was raised 5.8 percent for the 2000-2001 school year. A primary reason for tuition hikes is faculty and staff salaries . So we , SUU students pay tuition and a 5.8 percent of increasing tuition . I can ' t find any reason why faculties' salaries increased 3.06 percent to 5.8 percent. What is improved? And then increase tuition again . SUU doesn 't consider its students , it just thinks about how to increase tuition. I feel so uncomfortable at this point. I disagree with the idea of increasing tuition next year. Even if it has been discussed to increase tuition, it is too much to raise it. There should be enough reasons that students can agree with understandably. Jin-Kyu Lee Don't cut corners TO THE EDITOR: Since the weather has gotten worse, I have noticed that there is a lot of mud on the floors in the buildings here on campus. I have wondered why this is so. When I got to class the other day I looked down and had mud on my shoes. Then I remembered that I had cut the corner and walked across the grass on the way to class. Other people must also be cutting corners and walking on the grass instead of the sidewalk. Is this why the grass has been trampled to mud and why the tuition is always on the rise? It costs money for the cement to be put in the corners of the sidewalks, the grass to be replaced and the floors to be cleaned. If people are cutting comers of sidewalks, how many of them are cutting comers in life~ Robert Hall SOUTHERN UTAH UNIVERSITY · CEDAR CITY . This school year, 25 percent of SUU students were registered to vote. Students could register a number of different ways. SUUSA and the Civic Awareness Committee , consisting of one representative from the Center for Politics, College Democrats, College Republicans, Judicial Council, two HSS senators and other student volunteers set up a registration booth in the Sharwan Smith Center for several days. Students were encouraged to register to vote, pick up voter information pamphlets and, if needed, pick up absentee ballot applications. Also, there were registration forms available at school activities throughout the semester. SUUSA · members, Presidential Ambassadors and Clubs and Organization Representatives were asked to register students in their classes and organizations. · Every incoming freshman received a registration form in the packet distributed at the Welcome Week assembly . Students and community members could also register Oct. 14 at Albertson's, where the Civic Awareness Committee set up a registration booth. Each individual who assisted with the registration drive was instructed to return all forms to me by Oct.17. There were a number of ways students could register to vote and become informed about Election 2000. There were 2,500 forms distnbuted to SUU students and 1,500 of those forms were turned in by SUUSA. Students were given the option of mailing the form -in on their own. Each week Iron County forms were hand delivered to the county clerk's office. Overall, students were excited to register and to vote. On Nov. 7, we talked to hundreds of students and contacted several different precincts. An estimated 75 percent of the registered SUU students voted either by absentee ballots or at their specific voting precinct. That is exciting! SUU registered the highest percentage of students than any other university in the state! Thank you to those who assisted me with these efforts.. I appreciate the support and excitement from the students, faculty and staff. Although, the excitement of students was high and voter turnout was high, it came to my attention that there was a glitch in our system. There were few students who went to vote and were told they were not registered in this county. I apologize for this. There are a number of things that could have happened and it would be difficult to track a single cause of this problem. There were several students assisting me with the registrat ion drive . As mentioned earlier, everyone was asked to return all forms to me by Oct. 17. If they were not returned to me by the deadline, the forms were not processed for this election. Also, if any information was left off the form [birth dates. apartment numbers, driver's license, last four digits of social security number, etc.] it was not processed. With this last situation, the county clerk's office either mailed the form back to the individual or called and left a message at the individual's home. It was then the student's responsibility to · completely fill out the form and return it. Another possibility, if a student put his or her home address as the permanent address and his or her Cedar address as their mailing address, the form was sent to the home county. As you can see, any of these things could have happened. Again, I apologize for the inconvienience. We are working to improve this for the future. I'd like to thank the different organizations and individuals who helped with this project. I'd also like to thank my committee; the Civic Awareness Committee. Students who are interested in becoming actively involved with civic awareness are welcome to join the committee. Information is available at the SUUSA office. ..,. ., |
