C ~ SUU's men's and wo"men's cross country teams will compete in their final regular season race Saturday at the Eighth-Annual UNLV Cross Country Invitational: The women's 5-kilometer race will begin at 9 a.m. (MST), while the men's 8-k run will follow at 9:30 a.m. (MST), at Sunset Park in Las Vegas, Nev. The Thunderbird will compete against Utah, Cal State Dominguez Hills, Long Beach State, San Diego State, Utah Valley State College and the host Rebels. The Thunderbird women enter Saturday's race as the defending team champions, defeating UNLV 24-47 in last year's race. Both teams enjoyed last weekend off after competing in four-straight races to open the season . The Thunderbirds last competed at the 27th-Annual Stanford Invitational Sept. 30, ·in Palo Alto, Calif. The men's team finished eighth out of 18 teams, while the women placed 14th in a 21-team field . "Our team looks refreshed and ready to go heading into this weekend ." Houle said. "The men's race is sh~ping up to be a two-team race between us and Long Beach State. What we want to do this weekend is have our top-three (Moore, James, Wright) go out as fast as they can and hope that either Dustin [Hudspeth}, Cody [Moat]. Adam [Brown] or Greg [Harris} can beat Long Beach's fourth guy. This race Saturday will be a good indicator on how we will do in the Conference race.· "I think our women will have to set a good pace early and hope our fo\Jrth and fifth runners can keep it up," Houle continued. "This will be a good race for 1,..1s and will help prepare us for the conference meet. We are a better team than we were last year and with the way the conference is shaping up, UMKC will be the team to beat, so we will need a good performance out of our women to get ready for the.Mid-Con meet. · Through Oct. 10, the SUU men own three of the top-10 times in the conference. Moore's 25:28 at Stanford ranks him fifth overall , while James' 25:58, also at Stanford, ranks him ninth. Wright owns the 10th-besttime with his 26:03.40 at UC Irvine. The 'Birds own three top-10 rankings in women's competition. Senior Kelly Moore has the ninth-best mark of 19:'02 set at SDSU , while senior Teresa Rice and junior Jandee Hood are tied for 10th at 19:05 set at SDSU and Portland, respectively. SUU will enjoy another week off to· prepare to defend its titles at the MidContinent Conference Championships, hosted by Western Illinois Oct. 28, in Macomb, Ill. The men's team is the three-time defending Mid-Con champions, while the women are twotime defending champions. Eclipse employees averaged over. $2~000! N o-w hiri~g for Sum~er 2001 .
