What he calls censorship is really editing . Is it ·anti-intellectualism· for a person to elevate their vocabulary by choosing to not voluntarily hear unnecessary obscenities at a movie? What Mr. Roberds calls a majoritarian tyran-ny, I call free .enterprise and good business sense. The majority of students here at SUU desire to see the edited version of certain movies, don't they have the right to request that? Mr. Roberds goes on to complain about the way this campus is run by saying , "students are already told wtiat they may and may not view on the internet, faculty self-censor themselves for fear of offending someone in class .. ." As far as I am .aware, pornography is the only thing that is blocked from the school internet. I don't consider pornography to be either educational or art. I would challenge the professor to cite one constructive side effect of pornography at school. As far as faculty having to selfcensor themselves so as not to offend someone in class ; welcome to the world of public speaking. 'M'lere have you been for the past century? Ask the current presidential candidates about self-censorship. It doesn't only happen at SUU. The professor goes on to insult those of us·who do want to' see edited movies , by calling us ·crypto-fascist .goons· and "self righteous bible pounding guardians of truth ," Would he speak so harshly against other ethnic , racial and religious grou~? · He then states.that the purpose of a university is to "expose the student tE> new ideas, new perspectives, to tear down the box and explore the world." I am not sure why everyone else is here , but I came to learn a profession and develop the skills necessary to be successful. I don't think learning to appreciate obscenities and filth is part of that learning process . I find it disturbing that a professor who has studied the field of political science, would suggest moral laws and principles have no place in America. Self-restraint is what made this nation great: He said , "genius cannot bloom nor freedom exist when predeter- · mined imposed (self-imposed?) limitations ere enforced.· Maybe the professor thinks a kite would fly°higher if you cut the string that holds it back . He seems to be forgetting that without the "restrictive· string, the kite would fall from the sky. Mr. Roberds also said it was democracy that sentenced to death Socrates, Jesus, Joan of Arc and Joseph Smith. I submit it was mobocracy, the complete lack of democracy. I don 't see how one can compare these martyrdoms to the bleeping out . of a few F-words and or sexually explicit scenes. I appreciate the views of those who want optioh to see the unedited version . I do not understand why they think they do not have this opportunity with three theatres in Cedar City. However, I do not know of a place , other than the campus theatre , that al1ows anyone to see the edited version of a movie. 'M'ly do you seel< tq take away our options? In the words of Professor Roberds, "the price we pay for genius, for brilliance, for discovery, is tolerance for those we disagree with, despise, cannot understand , and who make us uncomfortable ." It appears to me that it is you who are intolerant of those you disagree with , despise and cannot understand . Maybe it's about time you practiced what you preach.
