Lunt pens coachiog book There's a great deal more than meets the eye in the life of an athletic team coach on any level, says Steve Lunt, the chair of SUU's physical education department. In fact, there's so much more to it than most realize, that Lunt has penned a book: So You Want to Be a Coach. The book, published in manuscript form for the present, details the myriad duties and responsibilities that those in the coaching profession will most likely face. "Coaching is not easy-if you want to be a good coach,· says Lunt. "Many people see coaching as a high-profile, glamorous position. The part of coaching most people notice is about 10 percent of the Steve Lunt job: show time; game time. - What is not seen or known is the remaining 90 percent where all of the preparations and many problems occur." The 76-page book includes a foreward for SUU President Emeritus Gerald R. Sherratt, and is intended for the use of students and others who may wish to coach. Lunt has begun using the work in some of his courses and has received very positive reviews from students. Lunt has a wealth of experience in the field, including many years of coaching teams, of officiating and. most markedly, of preparing future coaches. His department is known as "The Coaching Factory" for the great numbers of coaches he has placed in Utah's prep ranks. More than 300 SUU grads coach at high schools of all sizes in the state and the majority of state championships in the region include teams coached by SUU products. The book draws on Lunt's experiences and teachings and outlines what coaches can expect from such quarters as superiors, subordinates, peers and associates, athletes, the media. and legal and ethical · responsibilities. "Not o.nly is the coach responsible for the team's conduct, appearance, sportsmanship and behavior, but coaches are also accountable for liability situations with facilities, fields and courts, equip-ment, supplies, and the prevention, care and treatment of injuries,• he writes in the book. Lunt spends considerable time in So You Want to Be a Coach dealing with the importance of one developing a coaching philosophy and he expands on the list of personal qualities that are important for a coach to develop in his or her self. In his preface to the book, Lunt notes: "Do not get into coaching for the wrong reason. Pursue coaching with the attitude and intent required to be a good coach and role model. Society needs positive role models and leaders. This is the byproduct of sports.· Those interested in obtaining a copy of the book may contact Lunt at 586-7816. 4 491 South Main (Behind H~nan's) artist: Kurtis L.
