Tuition: pay now, earn later BY ANNA TURPIN OF THE JOURNAL STAFF One more line SUU students wait In line at the SUU Bookstore in order to buy neccessary school supplies and textbooks. It may be painful writing out those checks for tuition, fees, books and rent as the semester dawns, but at least SUU students have it easy, financially speaking, in comparison to the average college student in America ...right? The average cost for four years of college starting in 2000 at a public university in the United States is about $43,561 , according to BankRate.com. That's more than a 2000 BMW Z3 2.8 Roadster. Many other companies specializing in college cost planning assistance such as Smart Money, the Wall Street Journal magazine of personal business, SallieMae.com , Morgan Financial group and Internet Solutions, Inc. have internet sites to help plan for the financial needs of college. The rates at the different sites vary within $100. That calculation may seem steep to SUU students who pay a fraction of that amount during the two to four years attending this university, but the numbers aren't too far off from students at SUU. This dollar amount includes everything from tuition to ordering in late-night pizza, which does need to be included in the cost considering just how much college students eat pizza. But going with the current inflation rate, every year the cost goes up. If a student plans on beginning college at a public university in America in 2002, he or she can plan on spending on average $45,703; in 2003, $47,956; and in 2005, $52,818. For those whose brains haven't recovered from the plethora of holiday parties, that's a lot of money. Considering that Utah resident student tuition, including fees, is $982.50, college can cost a student $31 ,260 after four years of attending SUU. That is $12,301 less than the national average. However, non-resident tuition and fees is $3,097.50 and estimated with more transportation costs, students can pay or owe $48,580 at graduation, which is about $5,000 more than the national average. As said, these costs include everything. The averages used in the total amount were composites bf the suggested expenditures in the websites and are listed as follows: • Tuition and fees: (resident) $982.50, (non-resident) $3,097.50 • Course an lab fees: $105 per semester • Books: $200 per semester • Housing: $850 per semester • Utilities: $37 per month • Food and personal items: $135 per month • Extras (such as maintaining a musical instrument): $25 per month (continued on page 11) |
