OLE MISS FOOTBALL PLAYER DROWNS: The body of Joey Embry, a University of Mississippi offensive tackle, was found early yesterday in a pond on a golf course. Embry, 21, drowned apparently after suffering a diabetic-related seizure, said Oktibbeha County coroner Michael Hunt. Drugs and alcohol were not suspected to be a factor, he said. Embry and two friends from his hometown in Bruce had gone to the Mississippi State University Golf Course late Monday night to search for golf balls. They apparently had played the course earlier in the day. Soon after they arrived about 11 p.m., his companions could not find Embry. After searching the course, they called 911 about 1: 19 a.m. yesterday, and Embry's body was recovered from the pond about an hour later. DREW FAILS T O WIN FREE AGENCY: J.D. Drew, the former Florida State outfielder who attempted to find a loophole in baseball's draft rules, failed yesterday in his attempt to win free agency. Arbitrator Dana Eischen ruled he does not have the authority to rule on Drew's status because the player is not a member of the Major League Baseball Players Association, which represents only those on 40-man rosters. The Phillies, who selected Drew with their first-round pick last summer, retain his negotiating rights through next Monday. If he doesn't sign by 12:01 a.m. EDT Tuesday, he is available to be selected by any team in the 1998 amateur draft, which starts June 2. Drew and his agent, Scott Baras, had demanded Sl 1 million from the Phillies, who in tum offered a deal guaranteeing $2 million with the chance to eam $4 million more.
