The matter has not been discussed by church leaders, said the First Presidency, the final decision-making body of the 10 million member church. The Los Angeles Times reported Monday that officials of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints arc debating a proposal to repudiate some historic doctrines and statements linking skin color to the curse of Cain. President Gordon Hinckley and his two counselors said in a statement they were surprised by the report. The report comes as church membership is blcsscrnine: in Africa and other developing nations. UTAH JOINS 19 STATES, JUSTICE DEPARTMENT IN tAWSUIT: Utah, 19 other states and the Justice Department have filed lawsuits against Microsoft Corp., alleging it is using illegal means to squeeze competitors to its Windows computer operating software out of the market. The states and the Justice Department filed their lawsuits in Washington D.C. on Monday, the same day the computer giant began shipping its Windows 98 software, an operating system that functions as a computer's "brain." The lawsuits say Redmond, Wash.-based Microsoft's tactics limit consumer access to new products at fair prices and hinders innovation by other software makers. "We are taking this action to give a fair shake to competitors and a free choice to consumers in one of the most crucial industries in this nation," said Utah Atty. Gen. Jan Graham. SCENIC AIRLINES LOGS ANOTHER CRASH: Federal investigators are looking into the weekend crash-landing of a Scenic Airlines' "flightseeing" llight. Two German tourists were aboard. The plane crash-landed at the Monument Valley Airport near the Utah-Arizona border Sunday, said Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) spokesman /YIJtch Barker. The pilot and a passenger suffered minor injunes. Barker said the FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board are investigating the incident. No cause has been determined, but gusty winds may have played a pan, he said. The crash was the second Scenic Airlines accident this month.
