Show THE BYU BARS ‘AMISTAD’ FROM ITS VARSITY THEATRE: In 1994, the Academy Award-winning Schindler’s List’ ran afoul of Mormon church-owned Brigham Young University for its nudity. Now, Amistad, another critically acclaimed Steven Spielberg film that depicts a bloody 19th century slave mutiny aboard a Spanish ship and subsequent trials of the mutineers in America, has been banned from the school’s Varsity Theatre. The theater had scheduled Amistad long before the movie had been released or viewed by anyone at BYU, school spokeswoman Carrie Jenkins said. “It was looked at as a popular film and one that college students would enjoy,” Jenkins said. She could not say what there was specifically about the movie that would be considered offensive, only that BYU had “received reports” that Amistad would be difficult to edit according to the school’s standard.
