Show 'BIRD SPORTS Hillock names assistant coach Southern Utah Head Women's Basketball Coach Joe Hillock has named Anna West as assistant coach. West, 25, comes to Cedar City after spending last season as an assistant at Montana State. "I'm thrilled to be here," West said. "Especially being able to work with Coach Hi.Hock. He seems very excited with the move into the Mid-Continent Conference next season, and I'm excited to be a part of something that is moving forward." Despite her youth, West brings impressive credentials to Cedar City. West was head coach at Indiana's Graceland College from 1994-95. West has also worked at the University of Tennessee's summer basketball camps with legendary head coach Pat Summitt, in addition to serving at Montana State. "For such a young age her background is outstanding," Hillock said. "She's been with some great programs -working at Tennesseeand she can help broaden our recruiting as she is from Texas and has lived in Tennessee." A Texas native, West played college ball at Panhandle State in Oklahoma from 1989 to 1993. She finished her career as the Aggies' alltime leader in assists, third on the school's alltime scoring list, and holds all of Panhandle State's records for three-point shooting. She feels that her recent playing days will be an asset to the program. "I'm not that far removed from my playing days, so I think I have a feel for the players and I still have that player mentality." West also feels she brings strength in recruiting. "I love to recruit," West said. "I love every facet about it. Also being from Texas, I can hopefully bring in some kids from down there. " After graduating from Panhandle State in May of 1993 with a bachelor's degree in psychology, West went on to graduate school at the University of Tennessee. She earned a master's in sports psychology in 1994, while working in academics at Tennessee; attending Summitt's practice sessions and working Summitt's camps in '94 and '95. West was also head coach at Graceland College for a year before working at Montana State, where her team finished with a 15-14 record.
