The SUU chapter of Zeta Tau Alpha Fraternity for women has joined forces with the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation to sponsor awareness booths in the Student Center Living Room for all students and faculty this month. The sisteys of ZTA will be handing out ribbons and shower cards in the Student Center on Oct. 17-18 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Breast cancer is the leading cause of cancer death among women between the ages of 35 and 54 in America. It is estimated that 46,000 women will die of breast cancer this year, and 182,000 women will be diagnosed with the disease. "Education about breast cancer is the best way to fight it, 11 said Joanna Kay, a sophomore education major from Prior Lake, Minn. Kay is the ZTA service chair, and has organized the awareness booths in the Student Center. The booths will have information about breast cancer available, and ZTA members will be handing out ribbons for students to wear and show support for women with breast cancer. Female students will also be able to pick up a shower card, which illustrates how to do monthly self breast exams. The cards are designed to hang from a shower head. This week, the shower cards will be distributed on campus only; later in the year, the community will also receive them. "The shower cards are great, especially if breast cancer runs in your family. Detecting breast cancer in the early stages will better your chances of curing it," according to Tate Bryan, president of SUU's chapter of ZTA. Along with Kay, Bryan and the sisters of ZTA have been working with the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation since their organization was first chartered. Last spring, ZTA members sponsored their first annual "Spike Fest" outdoor volleyball tournament. The event, which was a great success, raised nearly $600. All proceeds from the tournament went directly to the Komen Foundation. According to Kay, ZTA plans to hold a "Spike Fest" fundraiser next spring, and hopes to continue the event in years to come. April 1 is ZTA's national "Don't Be A Fool" campaign to promote breast cancer awareness. Shower cards displaying instructions are handed out in communities throughout the U.S. In addition, the organization sponsors ·a II Race for the Cure" marathon on several campuses and in many communities across the country. The race highlights women who have survived breast cancer. The local ZTA chapter does not currently hold a "Race for the Cure, 11 but Kay said they do provide financial support and volunteers for races held in other areas. The sisters of ZTA encourage all students and faculty to join them in the Student Center Living Room next week to support National Breast Cancer Awareness Month .
