Lady 'Birds travel to Nevada By THE SU SPORTS INFORMATION OFFICE SU's women's basketball team hits the road for three games in four nights this weekend as the 'Birds travel to Reno, Nev., to participate in the Holiday Inn Classic, before moving on to Long Beach, Calif., for a matchup with Long Beach State. The 'Birds meet tournament host Nevada ( 1-0) Friday night and either Illinois-Chicago (1-1) or Sam Houston State (1-1) Saturday night, then tra vel to Long Beach for a Monday m eeting with the 49ers (0- 1). SU and Nevada have m et three times in the past, with SU holding a 2-1 advantage in the series, including two straight wins. The teams m et twice during the 1992-93 season, with SU prevailing 61-44 at home and 78-73 in Reno. Nevada's win came during the 1989-90 season, a 78-77 overtime triumph in Reno. No matter what team SU faces in the second night of the Holiday Inn Classic it will be the initial meeting between the two teams, as the ' Birds have never squared off against Illinois-Chicago or Sam Houston State. SU and Long Beach State have met once before this upcoming game, with LBSU taking a 107-45 victory at the Long Beach Invitational during the 1990-91 season. N evada opened the season with a 74-71 home win over Cal State Northridge, a positive start for a t eam that didn't win a Big West Conference game last year. Just three lettermen return from last year's 3-24 squad. Six true fresh men and two JuCo players fill the rem aining spots on the team. SU is corning off a disappointing 64-5 7 home loss to Utah in which the Utes scored the game's final six points to secure the victory and drop the 'Birds to 1-2 on the season. SU's lone win came Saturday in the consolation game of the Rocky Mountain Invitational, when it handed Pennsylvania a 75 -56 defeat. The 'Birds lost the opener, 7567, to Tulane last Friday night. Cherri Frandsen has led the 'Birds in scoring every time out this season, tallying 25 against Tulane and 18 against Penn to earn a spot on the Rocky Mountain Invitational all-tournament team before finishing with 14 against Utah T uesday night. Myndee Larsen has led the team in rebounding every night, with a pair of eightboard performances against Tulane and Penn and 11 against Utah. Larsen has also been in double figures scoring every game, with 13 against Tulane, 15 against Penn, and 12 against Utah. The 'Birds also blocked 10 shots in each of the first two gam es but had just two, both by Larsen, against Utah. SU was the nation's seventh-ran ked freethrow shooting team last year, with a 74.l percent accuracy rate. The team is approaching that mark this year, with a 71.6 percent rate through the first three gam es. T he 'Birds hit 19 of 22 free-throws (86.4 percent) against Tulane before slipping to 15 of 25 (60 percen t) against Pennsylvania and 14-20 (70 percent) against Utah . SU was also among the nation's top-20 defensive team s last year. The 'Birds ranked 18th after limiting opponen ts to 3 7 .1 percent field goal success, but has bettered those numbers so far this season, allowing opponents just a 36.4 percent success rate, including a stifling 30.8 percent effort against Penn.
