Show THE ARTS AND ENTERTAINMENT Plenty of concerts planned for fall Ten recitals or concerts still remain on the busy fall quarter calendar of the SUU music department. Six events, including a two-night opera presentation, "The Green Eyed Monster is Hiding in the Opera Cellar," are scheduled for November. The remaining four performances will be during December. "Of course, all of this is in addition to a variety of other activities such as performing at athletic and other events like the Dec. 9-10 Dickens Dinner in the Great Hall," Bart Shanklin, head of the music department, points out. November's events include a performance of the Orchestra of Southern Utah, the two nights of opera, and a concert by the SUU Orchestra. December's planned events include a concert by SUU jazz bands, two-in-one-day Christmas concerts by SUU choirs, and a presentation by SUU small ensembles. Free student recitals are scheduled in the Thorley Recital hall at 2 p.m. on Nov. 4, Nov. 18, and Dec. 2. The public is also invited to attend these performances. THE BEST NEW MUSIC FIRST .c ' tarmaker' complements SU By BECKI LESSER JOURNAL STAFF WRITER In e rly July, a new work of art was introduced to SU J . A statue, "Starmaker: Mother of the UnivPrse" was erected near the new Science Centc.. Th !>tatue was sculpted by Nolan Johnson, of Lehi, rtah, and Angelo Caravaglia of Carefree, Calif Tht roject took approximately two years, and enta .d sculpting the work and landscaping the area surrounding "Starmaker." The sculptors were chosen from four prospective artists with different ideas for the location, according to Bonnie Bishop, head of the home economics department and member of the committee to erect the statue. Bishop added that the artist wanted the statue to "encourage expansion of thought." "Starmaker" is a bronze environmental statue. The project, however, encompasses more than 1988 CHEVY BERETTA Auto, Air V6 tilt, cruise, cassette, power locks and more. $4925 1993 CHEVY CORSICA 4 door, Auto, Air, V6 t \lt, ~~~~~,E~~ll!m'W;gr!acks and $9350 1992 CHEVY ASTRO VAN V6 tilt, cruise, cassctte, _power locks, glas• luggage rack, sun screen, cxte ndeo, 7/8 passengers $ l 2442 just the sculpture. The landscaping surrounding "Starmaker" is part of the statue as well. Vice President for University Affairs Michael D. Richards says he is "very pleased with the look of the statue." According to Richards, the content of the statue has no particular significance to the school. The sculpture is SUU's response to the growing need for artistic appreciation within the general public, he says. Al Tait, dean of Science and another member of the statue-council, says he feels that "the area is nice, and the statue fits the setting." The Utah Arts Council sponsors a state "One Percent for Arts" program. This program paid the bill for the $18,000 statue. Richards feels that the "Starmaker" is "a positive contribution to the campus through the 'One Percent for Arts' program." "Starmaker" is located just north of the Science Center, and just west of the General Classroom Building, which houses the home economics department . 1989 BUICK REGAL Auto, Air, X.6, tilt, cruise, ~~d~o~:~ ows, power locks $6351 1993 PONTIAC GRAND AM ~::;l~~ rnrgo~1 Auto, Air, V6 ti\t, ruise, s, power $11398 1992 JEEP CHEROKEE LAREDO 4 door, 4 litcr, k~ylcss entry, all~wy whee s, Air, V6 tilJ, cru1se,cassette, power locks $16799 5 8 6 -6595 360N.MAIN•CEDARCITY 1993 CHEVY CAVALIER RS 4 door, Auto, Air, til t, cruise, cassette, power locks and more . $ 8625 l.
