Show ITHE CAMPUS I SUU ski club awaits opening of the slopes By RYAN BENSON JOURNAL ST AFF WRITER Old man winter has once again made his mark in southern Utah, but the cold months don't necessarily have to be gloomy. Students who have the desire to ski can look forward to new opportunities provided by the SUU Ski Club. SUU's ski club is looking forward to another season of skiing and snowboarding, which is the focus of the club. This year the ski club is part of a statewide establishment with most of the other colleges and universities in Utah. "This is a great opportunity for st uden ts to take advantage of som e great discounts at resorts all over Utah," said Todd Drummond, ski club president. According to Drummond, the ski club's purpose is to promote skiing and give students the opportunity to ski at an affordable price for students tigh t bu dgets. Drummond and Troy Blanchard, ski club vice president, have made plans with Brian Head and Elk Meadows, w ho have given SUU's ski club m embers discounts on season passes in the past, to do so this year as well. Along with the student member discounts, the club has two big ski trips planned for the season, one to Telluride resort in Colorado, Jan. 1316, and one to Jackson Hole, Wyo., over spring break in March. The trips will not cost student skiers more than $200. Last ski season 53 SUU skiers had the opportunity to stay for three days and three nights in Crested Butte, Colo., as one of the promised trips. Transportation was also provided for students for the cost of $153, but when compared to the standard $44 day pass, the discount proved beneficial to the ski club members, Drummond said. Furthermore, as part of the statewide ski club, m embers get discounts throughout the state of Utah. A $25 membership fee is required prior to the ben efits offered to ski club members. For those students who have yet to ski t he slopes and have the desire to learn can purchase a package consisting of a free day pass, free equipment rentals and free lessons to build ones interest in skiing. "The Ski Club was the largest club on campus last year w ith more than 200 m em bers, and judging by the amount of people at the club registration table, this year has a promising outlook also," said D rummond. Students who have questions or are interested in becoming members of the ski club can contact Drummond at either 586-4199 or 586-31 19. SUU farming is a reality Old MacDonald had a farm and SUU does, too. And on this farm are cattle and sheep. E-I-E-1-0. The Valley Farm, located along the south side of Highway 56, has been a part of SUU since it became an institution. Hands-on agriculture study and teaching labs are all part of the farm experience for some students involved in Animal Science, Agronomy and crop production. Students' involvement with the farm is also through agricultural and horsemanship classes. The farm also helps to support itself. "Bulls and rams are sold at National Livestock shows," said B. Al Tait, dean of the College of Science, "which gives the farm additional financial support." Agriculute Director Daniel Dail helps to run the farm on the campus end. JOB OPENIN("i! ST.
