The exhibit will run May 5-27 in the large gallery, and sn1dent art works will be sale during that period. Students are allowed to submit a total of five works that have been completed after April 30, 1993, and that have not been previously shown in the Braithwaite Fine Arts Gallery, said Brooks. T he art pieces must be subm itted to the art department office by 5 p.m. Thursday. Categories for the student exhibition include painting, printmaking, drawing, ceramics, sculpture, illustration, photography and mixed media. Students can obtain entry for ms and a prospectus from the Braithwaite Gallery, the art department office, or the Student Activities Center. CEDAR CITY ART EXHIBIT CONTINUES AT GALLERY: "Neighborhoods of the 90's: Artists Interpretations," the 53rd annual Cedar C ity A rt Exhibition, is currently showing at the Braithwaite Fine Arts Gallery. TI1e large gallery displays various works fro m artists around the country. The exhibit focuses on contemporary American neighborhoods. One of the artists featured is Cedar C ity's own Valerie Cohen. T he small gallery houses works from SUU student Rhett Murray. Murray is a senior art/secondary education major from Springville, Utah. The exhibit continues until April 29. PERFORMING GROUP TO TOUR SOUTHERN UT AH: The Oratio Society if Utal1, better known for its an nual Christmas presentation of Handel's Messiah is planning a spring concert tl1at wi ll bring tl1em to Cedar City May 2 at 7 p.m. The performance is scheduled at Cedar H igh School and will cost students $3. The group also has a concert April 29 in St George. Acclamation sang a c a review concert Friday a nd Saturday in the SUU Auditorium. The concert was free to students a nd included a tribute to America. The group will soon tratiel to Japan where they will sing on tour. Acclamation's trip was made poss ible with the help of SUUSA senate. SU pre sent s opera on the lighter side Senior music major Laurice F. Rowley performed Friday at her sen ior recital. Rowley, a mezzo-soprano, sang while Jennifer Hartman accompa n ied on the piano. Some of Rowley's selections included 'Der Nussbaum' by Robert Schumann a nd 'W ohin?' by Franz Schubert. The music department at SUU will show the lighter side of opera with two presentations April 21-23. Gilbert and Sullivan's Trial by Jury, and Giacomo Puccini's Gianni Sch icchi will be presented as "double features" in the SUU Auditorium. C urtain times are 7:30 p.m., and admission is $5 for adults and $2 for students. T ickets are available th rough the SUU TI1eatre Box Office at 586-7876. Trial by Jury is the tale of a young woman who decides that her former fia nce is not going to get away with leaving her at the alter. She sues the handsome young cad, who does h is best to placate the judge and jury. According to Carol A nn Modesitt, director of both one-act productions, the situation is not far-fetched at all. In February, a well-known Salt lake C ity artist was sued for the same reason . T rial by Jury will star Misty Atkinson as the jilted bride, Steve Schmid as her cx-fiance, Jared Hansen as tl1e judge, and Jim Wilcock as d1e counselor. Music for the prod uction will be by the SUU Orchestra, directed by David Cole. . Gianni Schicci is an opera buffa by Puccini, composer of such classics as la Boheme and Madame Butterfly. The plot involves relatives fighting over tl1e inheritance left by a man who just died. However, tl1ey discover tl1at his will disinherits d1em all , so m ey hi re tl1e foxy Gianni Schied to help them- to d1eir regret. "TI1 is story is much older tl1an the producers of the film Greedy would have us to believe," said Modesitt, referring to tl1e resemblance to tl1e cu rrent motion picture. TI1e cast will include Jim W ilcock as G ianni Sch ied, Martina Bishop as Loretta, and guest tenor George Oyer as Rinuccio. Accompaniment will include two pianos. |
