One of my more senior teeth, however, decided to break off while I was chewing hard on an ice cream cone, so I called my dentist, somewhat sheepish, and got a quick appointment. I was thinking how nice it was of him to see me so quickly, but the truth was that he just couldnt wait to get even. I entered his office and he deserted the patient he was grinding on, just to come into the waiting room, smirk at me, and tell his wife to make the next payment on their yacht Okay. If you die, and by chance you DONT go to Heaven, one of the punishments available for leading a wicked life is to have Nomes teeth installed permanently in your head. My mouth was full of hands and mirrors and I couldnt even grunt in protest. Being a genius by his own admission, my dentist found where half a pound of tooth had disappeared, and told his assistant in a foreign language what to bring him so that he could fix it. I said it really wasnt too painful, and I could make an appointment in 1985 when he wasnt so busy, but it was no use. He had me where he wanted me. Without going into the gory and painful details of that experience, let me just tell you that he drilled halfway through my collarbone (Just a bit more and well be through) to smoothe off some rough edges without benefit of novocaine. When my eyebrows hit my hairline in protest over the lack of pain killer, he grinned evilly and said, Dont you remember? The novocaine never works on you until youre halfway home. Or do you lie in that column of yours? My good man, do you still beat your wife? From that day on, in my prayers, I remember my teeth and wish them a long, happy and unfragmented life. I have not yet decided whether or not to let my dentist read this column. If I do, however, I shall remind him of an old, but true, proverb: Never argue with a man of the cloth or a journalist; a man of the cloth will call upon the Lord as his witness, and a journalist will have the last word IN PRINT.
