Well be taking off in an hour or two and suddenly my knees and tear glands are feeling under the weather. Good Heavens! He wont be under my roof or my own mothers; whats to become of him? Will he remember to brush his teeth and change his underwear? Why have I done this thing? I wont sleep for worry; I am totally unaccustomed to the quiet. I call my mother. She says I sound awful. I agree. She says that I was 11 when I first went away to camp, and that I went for eight weeks and she survived, but all the same she knows how I feel. She says I must be brave, that I am doing the right thing. I cannot answer her. I am crying and I need to sit down. She says she will call during the week, which she is SURE I will enjoy with my husband alone, when Im feeling better. I feel worse. I remember my son, the premature baby who nearly died. I remember how bald he was for two years. I remember doing everything backwards when I tried to toilet-trai- n him, and then he did it himself. I think of the first curly golden lock of his that I cut after some silly lady in a store called him a girl, and how I cried then. I cry harder. Its all gone so fast; now hes asking me which deodorant to use and if I think girls prefer feathered hair. Why hes all grown up and I havent yet stopped thinking of him as a baby. I know hell be homesick. How will he cope? I cry all the way to camp. Ill look awful tomorrow and I dont care. The camp director has to round my son up to tell us goodbye. He is obviously vexed with letting the other boys know he has parents. Where does he think THEY came from, or, for that matter, got here. I know! He is afraid Ill cry again. He takes off in a hurry to ditch the love letter I put in his suitcase. No doubt hell keep the five dollars I included. Well, my little man, have a good week, and please learn some patience for your mother. She really is trying to grow up with you. s' cs . -- v'. State opinion, at no charge Most people have at least as many opinions about current issues as editorial writers do. Sometimes, people become absolutely incensed with some of the editorial opinion they read in the paper. A recent editorial in this newspaper came out strongly against the death penalty, and people not only read it, but some of them phoned the office or came in and commented how violently they disagreed with that particular opinion. At that point they were invited to write a guest editorial on the subject, agreed they would like to do so, and promptly let the matter die. Hard as it may be to believe, we in the newspaper business DO get tired of reading our own opinions. It is refreshing and enlightening to receive and print opposing points of view, either in the form of letters to the editor or guest editorials. Editorial writers at Stahle Publications are sorely tempted to declare a National Week. Let us know what you think! Well even help you write it. And as long as it contains no libel and no obscenity, you can see your name and your opinions in print at no charge! Bank of Utah, N A Bank of Idaho, N A State Bank, Salt Lake City. Youll find we have your best interest at heart. First First First First as the Fourth of July. . Just what is that supposed to mean, anyway? Is this another holiday Americans have lost track of, like so many others? Have we buried the history and ideals of July 4 under commercialism and convenience (Why dont they just put it on a Monday like all the other ones?)? If you put an American flag decal on your windshield, does that prove you a real patriot? If you defend the right to bear any and all arms because are you you believe the Constitution says so, When you place your hand over your heart during the Pledge of Allegiance or choke up duruig the Banner, do you feel that makes you "true blue? Do you think the answers to any ot tnose questions matter? If you spend but a few minutes contemplating where we came from and what we have come through and to as a nation on America's birthday, probably you have done more than the average person will do to honor your country . Some of us will allocate time to count our blessings on that day, our rights and our freedoms. Others will, hopefully, count and consider their responsibilities. The point is, July Fourth, like Christmas, is meant to be spiritual in nature. Good honest Americans may display the flag; other good honest Americans may have burned one in protest. Both groups have the freedom to do so, and for that, especially on this nations 203rd birthday, we should all give thanks in unison.
