Show SUN CHRONICLE , Oct. 5, 1978, Pag Oct. 4, 1978, CLEARFIELD COURIER, 8 Page 8 School and Home by Dr. Daryl J. McCarty Executive Secretary Utah Education Association A wise man once said that those who forget the past are doomed to have no future. Too often, though, we write off the past as worthless. How frequently do we hear a school child complain that history is a dry" subject? How casually do we ridicule the ways of yesteryear without really understanding why they were that way? History is a sweeping, complicated topic. Anything that makes it more understandable should be greeted with enthusiasm. Scott Foresman and Companys new chart, entitled Great Events in World History, simplifies history. Its an illustrated time-linchart that begins with the year 2,000 B.C. and extends to the present. Each century is labeled with the events that moved and shook the world in those days. When did King John sign the Magna Charta? The chart tells you it was in 1215 A.D., a year after Genghis Khan conquered China and 14 years before the establishment of the Inquisition in Spain. The Greeks invented drama about 600 B.C.; the civil service system began in China about 100 A.D. ; invented algebra at Baghdad about too A D. ; Russia was founded by the Viking Iturik in 862 A.D. ; and Marconi flung a wireless singal across the Atlantic in 1901. Its all there on the chart. This chart isn't extremely large (8 inches by 88 inches), so it could be tacked or taped on the wall of the family room or a students bedroom. It might be important in helping that child to look back across the centuries and understand more about why the world is the way it is. We put clocks on walls, we put maps on walls. Why not put maps of history on walls? liie company will provide you with a history chart at no cost.
