Schedule for the squad to report for uniform issue and picture taking at 10:00 a.m. with lunch to follow and physicals to be given in the afternoon. Eighty-fou- r players are expected to be on hand for the initial practice session of the season. Two a day workouts begin in earnest on Monday, August 23, with the first three days being devoted to conditioning, before the players put on pads and begin contact work. The Wildcats open their ls campaign at Long Beach State on September 11. The start of a new season is one of the most exciting things in the world, said Wildcat Coach Dick Gwinn. We have a lot of ground to cover during the three weeks of preparation, but we had an excellent spring season and we have some truly outstanding athletes on hand to work with. Im anticipating a much 1976 better year. Several of the areas that the Wildcats suffered most in last season have changed to strengths. Last years offensive line, which was little more than p by seasons end, now boasts congood depth and a three-dee-p most in positions. Seventy-fiv- e hopefuls have suited up for beginners football in the WFFL league. To date they have spent a lot of time running and doing assorted exercises, and now are working on fundamentals. They have one more week of preparation, and then the football wars begin. Lets meet the coaches of our young Team number 2 is coached by 29 year old Spencer Smith. Spence and Marsha and their four children just recently moved to Roy from South Ogden. Their son Dee, 8, plays on the team. Backing him up from the stands are Carrie, 6, Michelle, 4 and 18 month old Scott. Spence attended Weber High School, where he ran cross country and the mile run in track. He coachpd WFFL football for four years in South Ogden. He spent three years officiating both high school and WFFL football. We are out there to teach fundamentals and let the kids have fun,. says Spence. VI... really love working with boys and coaching. Assistants to Spence are Mark Anderson and Bruce Wells. Gerald Gilbert coaches team number 3. He is 25 years old, married and has two children. Gerald and Sue moved to Roy three months ago with their children, Shawn, 8 and Amie,5. Gerald has played a lot of baseball at T.H. Bell and in Little League, and played church softball. He was a little league umpire while living in Ventura, Calif. He works in wholesale deliveries for Western General Dairies. .. Blaine Lingred assists Coach Gilbert, and their team is shaping up. Coach of team number 1 is Joe Nicotera from Blairsville, Penn., where he was active in athletics. He played a lot of sand-lo- t football, but was not large enough to really excel in the game he loved so much. He played most of his football in front of a TV set. Joe wrestled in high school and was the Pennsylvania State champion in the 127 pound class. He later coached wrestling and baseball for the recreation department at Blairsville. Joe and Anna Nicotera are parents of two children; Mike, 8, and Kevin, 5. He has a beautiful philosophy about football. Maybe, I can teach someone to do what I never had the opportunity to do because I wasnt bom to be a 250 pound giant. Joes assistants are Bud Norman and Chris Nye. s. . Terrace teams organize league WASHINGTON TERRACE Junior baseball players from Washington Terrace brought home the championship from the Soda Springs Invitational Tournament for the third year in a row. The players, all 5 years of age, won the title by beating Blackfoot Logan 0 This Washington Terrace team is the only team to ever win the and Smithfield trophy for two or more consecutive years. Team member Danny Rich was named the most valuable player by hitting six hits 7-- 2, 13-1- 3-- 6-- in nine trips to the plate, including two homers. Other honors went to Jed Fuhriman and Rex Coleman who shared the most valuable pitcher crown as each pitched two shutouts. Mike Rich got six for seven in batting. The team, coached by Bob Rich, Ron Jones and Craig Moore includes as members Mark Miller, John Watkins, Ricky Johnson, Troy Vigil, Mike Rich, Jed Fuhriman, Rex Coleman, Dirk Purser, Kelly Bitton, Daryl Alexander Steve Brooks and Danny Rich. bettef with several junior college transfers bolstering the ranks of webers returnees. Guard Steve Kelly was a player picked by preseason two pulications and should provide an anchor for the offensive front. Quarterback is another bright spot for the Wildcasts, with five potential candidates expected Saturday. Front runner for the starting job is senior Rod Bock-woldwho came on strong in the position last year after being moved back from his flanker spot. Bobby Martin has had ample time to recover from a series of injuries and should also challenge for the starting berth. Junior College transfer Jack Christiansen had an excellent spring season and should make a contribution as he becomes more familiar with the Wildcat offensive setup. The Wildcats will be sporting a new TbolCas they shift from a primary team to one that is more air conscious. To compliment the excellent throwing quarterbacks, the Cats have talented a number of extremely receivers. Four lettermen are back and will be joined by five newcomers who all have excellent advance notices. Bruce Rick Molina, Dor Burningham, Robinson, and Jay Spendlove are the returnees, while the new faces are Tommy Coleman, Randy Jordan, Kevin; Lowery, Mike Hall, and Keith Bockwoldt Runningback is still something of i question mark, and Coach Gwinn is wa iting to see who develops most quickly Mark Billmire, Tracy Deneke, and Doug McOmie return from last years squad tc. be joined by Eli Smith, Paul Barringer! Bruce Rick and Erick Hill. Defensively the Wildcats are more of good mark. The linebacking core is solid deep and expert. The linemen are young while the secondary will need time t( startei prove themselves. Four-yea- r Lorenzo Townsend anchors the defensiv line from his tackle position where he wil be joined by John Connelly, Johi Thompson, Chris Hineline, and Kevii Harmon, all sophomores who letterec last season as rookies. Newcomers in the front include Greg Panflioff of Roy Higl School. JC transfer Kim Lolo, and Jin t, Pacenka. Royals face Bountiful in opening match The Utah State of y If 3 M m m 7 semi-fin- al game of last year had all the markings Custers Last Stand, as the Braves of Bountiful scalped the loyal Royals. But tomorrow is a new year and a new ball game, and those Royals havent forgotten that shellacking that so abruptly ended their season. Its going to be a great game. Bountiful comes into the game with depth and strength in every position. They have a fine defensive unit that is anchored by a couple of 200 pounders named Bagley and Denning, who also play offense. TTieir fullback is a fine college prospect named Dickerson, who weighs 175 lbs. and receivers who can catch footThey have good quarter-backin- g to a balance fine running attack. They arent big, as high balls, school teams go, but they are tough. It will be a great test for the Royals. Roy is big. They average over 200 pounds on the defensive line and 190 on the offensive unit. And they have Jim McMahon who just might be the best quarterback in the state. He can throw that pig skin, and he has receivers who can catch it.
