Show 4 I Sun Chronicle along with Grant and Harding. Six seniors and five juniors from a variety of majors and political learnings participated in the three-mont- h seminar in which each student studied the lives of three presidents and wrote a character and personality sketch on each of them. Dr. Madsen said he was impressed with the leadership qualities identified by the students, each of whom demonstrated an intense interest in national affairs and politics. The Utah History professor said, I certainly agree that intelligence is number one, integrity number two and judgment number three. He feels the students 1976 preferences may be reflective of the American public in general. I think they are looking for someone a little bit conservative. They arent inclined to go out on a limb. In the concluding phase of the seminar, the students wrote lengthy supportive essays on the subject, The Presidential Character. John Anderson, a senior in chemistry, said in discussing the importance of intelligence: As future presidents inherit divisive issues of infinitely greater proportion than those confronted by their predecessors, a directing mind and intellectual capacity may become of paramount consideration in the selection of a yardstick has been devised by a group of University of Utah students to measure the greatness of U.S. presidents and evaluate the leadership potential of candidates for the nations highest office. Eleven students in the U Honors Program were involved in a unique winter term seminar A which produced a prioritized list of nine desired presidential qualities by examining the lives of the nations presidents. Intelligence, integrity and judgment were selected as the most important ingredients for presidential success, followed by foresight, 34 of ad- humanity, political skill, industry, ministrative ability and charisma. The seminar was organized by Dr. Brigham D. Madsen, professor of history and former administrative vice president, who said the criteria was used to rate former presidents and evaluate this years candidates for the presidency. William Henry Harrison and James A. Garfield were excluded from the survey because of their brief tenures as was Gerald Ford because he is still in office. However, Ford received the top rating among 14 official and unofficial 1976 presidential candidates, followed closely by Hubert Humphrey, Jimmy Carter and Ronald Reagan. Frank Church and Henry Jackson were fifth and sixth respectively. Applying their nine desired qualities to past presidents, the students rated five presidents as great with Abraham Lincoln first, He was followed by Washington, Jefferson, Franklin Roosevelt and Theodore Roosevelt. Among the modern presidents, Truman was ranked ninth as a near great, Lyndon Johnson, John Kennedy and Dwight Eisenhower, 15th, 16th and 17th respectively in the average grouping, and Richard Nixon 32nd as a failure Qualities Desired for a President of the United States 1.
