It is hard to believe, since fishing is the most popular outdoor activity in the state. Nevertheless, one of Utahs best fish, in one of the states most opoular fishing spots, is underutilized. Think about Lake Powell. Immediately you think of bass, then crappie and as you search your memory, you think of trout toward the more southern portions o htat magnificent body of water. But heres the clincher-diyou happen to think of walleye? Yes, theres walleye in those waters. d Candidates named 7 berths in the Region One candidates for all-stNorth-Sout- h game are as follows. Box Elder stands with a mark, Roy and the Lakers now have identical 3 records, Bear River is with the defeat, Skyview Weber dropped to is and Logan has come up with just one victory, and a 8 record. On Friday theRoyals will travel to meet the Skyview BobCats in a 3:30 clash in Smithfield. Then next week, the surgin gRoyals will meet another hot Region One team, the Bonneville Laker?. In last Tuesdays battle, Roy used some timely hits to spell defeat for the Warriors. Each team 5-- 2 the five Warrior hits. I was happy with Jims performance as he gave up only 99 pitches in seven innings of work. The defense behind Jimmy was excellent again. I cant complain. I tell these kids all they have to do is to make the natural plays and leave the spectacular plays up to the fancy ones. Usually those who make all the spectacular plays are the ones that mess up on routine plays. Coach Thompson started Jerry Ward against for several reasons. First, Jerry has been familiar with the Weber hitters for three years, where Mark Kartchner who played the game against Bear River, has not been too familiar with 7-- 2 7-- 4-- 5 5-- 2-- 7 Thompstin'will guide North Roy Highs Fred Thompson will guide the North baseball team in the annual North-Sout- h boys baseball game that is scheduled to be played at Affleck Park in Ogden on June 7. Presently Thompson has his team in second place in Region One and just a half a game out of first place behind the Box Elder Bees, the team Coach Thompson has yet to come up with a victory over. Thompson is a former Weber High and Weber State baseball star. He is only in his second year as head coach with the Royals and already other Region One coaches are respecting the teams he manufactures and tries to sell each season. Last year, Roy finished in third place, just one game away from a state tournament berth. Thompson has developed philosophies that have gained the respect of every player that performs under him. Probably the most unique attribute about this man, and hes getting better all the time, is that he loves baseball and he spends ample time showing people that he loves the sport. Thompson has been quoted as saying in the past, that he would rather be making championship baseball teams than making millions of dollars. He goes out to be the best. When the Royals have a home game scheduled and the rain or snow has dampened the field, you can guess where Thompson is. Hed rather be preparing his baseball field than building sitting working in a at a desk. Hes technical about his work. After each game, and then the following morning, he has statistics prepared and accurate. Dr. Darrell White picked a winner when he made the selection for a head Royal baseball coach. ten-stor- y Thompson a Keen Performer Himself When not coaching baseball and some spare time can be found, where else would Coach Thompson be but playing himself on a basebasll diamond. The Thompson family is baseball oriented and they like it that way. Fred performs in a top quality softball amateur league where a team has been formed of former Stonehocker and Clair Davis. (Third row) Manager Duane Price, Mike Bennion, Craig Hansen, Paul Zahn, and Larry Guinn. (Top row) Kelly Checketts, Mark Katchner, Kurt Bennington, Claude Payne, Mike McCoy and Orlando Gallegos, Weber State baseball players. Its fast pitch softball and the league schedule usually runs the weeks length. We decided about five or six years ago to throw together a good softball team. We called ourselves the Sav-o- n team and we start play in early April and run throught the end of August. Altogether last season, we played 71 games. We won 54 and lost about 17. Our team played in tournaments all across Utah, Montana, Idaho, California, Colorado, and Arizona. Our Sav-o- n team has been in fast-pitc- h two world-softba- ll tournaments and weve finished as high as tenth. Weve been to Wisconsin Missouiri and Phoenix to play in these tournaments, stated Coach Thompson. Coach Thompsons wife had this to say about her baseball loving husband, He loves the sport with both his heart and mind. He doesnt mind to get out and work at it either. He loves to play in games and what he doesnt know now, he picks up in books. I know he really loves those kids who are playing for him. As a family, we plan everything around Freds games. I myself really enjoy being a part of it all. I know that Fred loves to coach and hed do almost anything for those Roy High kids. FYed and I sat down one day and figured out how much he makes an hour for all the time he spends working at Roy High. It figured out to be about 11 cents an hour. I think its a thrill have him come home and say that Kurt Bennington did something special or tell me that someone else had a good I wouldnt want him day. doing anything else but coaching the boys at Coach Roger Reid, the Roy High. head basketball coach at Clearfield High and former teammate of Thompson said, Weve always been really good friends while playing baseball at Weber State. Ive always known Coach Thompson to be didicated Weber. Coach Thompson started Pat Hanley and he let him sit for himself and a hit resulted. After the Roy loss to Box Elder, Coach Thompson has tried to stress to his players that the team need not worry about Box Elder, but just the destiny of Roy itself. We want to go to state so bad that our teeth ache, said Coach Thompson. The seniors on this club have worked for three years to get to the point where they are now. We have people that have to be looked at and being in the state tournament is the place to be recognized. Mike McCoy, Rick Stonehocker, Ken Francis and others were members of the team that went to state two years ago. They want to attend again. rs AH I, m and loyal to every team he has been s with. that sort of thing is I can always hard to come by. remember Coach Thompson coming up with key hits in games at Weber State. Coach Craig Hansen, another former teammate of Thompsons and now an assistant coach at Clearfield, states, Probably the best compliment that I can give ole Thomps, is that he was and still is a dedicated guy. Hes not afraid to spend the time to be good. His mind is really on coaching and he has a good competitive attitude. Hes a lot of fun to be around. You never want to get into a contest of naming sports teams and nicknames with Thompson. The guy is unbelievable. He has to have the best mind for remembering sports names of anyone Ive ever known. On a trip to Arizona one time, we had a little contest of naming college teams and it soon He was developed into a just too good. The guy must take every Now-a-day- sports magazine printed. Before There were nose diving Coach Thompson is through at Roy High, they will have a top quality One final program over there. thing I can remember about Coach Thompaon is all the "doikers he hit. bloopers over first base.
