Show SOUTHERN UTAH NEWS WEDNESDAY MARCH 6, 2002 Community Fine Arts Evenings at the Library to feature Lees Ferry, historical quilts and local artists By Patti Tralongo Friends of the Library is pleased to announce the third season of their Spring Fine Arts program. The last two series of fund raisers were very favorably received by the community and successfully raised hundreds ofdollars for the purchase of new books. The cultural programs were presented on three Saturday evenings in February, March and April showcasing local talent. This year, due to the Olympics Games in February, the series will commence in March and run through May. The current Fine Arts Evenings At The Library will fear ture local artists, a historical, quilt presentation and a colorful narrative on Lees Ferry. The theme Inspiring Stories and Artistic Achievement's central to all three evenings as each program focuses on the skill and talent needed to create a work of art and inspire others. On March 16 (Saturday evening), Joan Larson, a gifted quilter and current President of the Quilt Club, will present the amazing tale of Civil War Quilts based on the book, Hidden in Plain View by Jacqueline Tobin, Hidden in Plain View (available from the library) tells the fascinating story of a friendship, a lost tradition, and an incredible discovery, explainingforthe first time how enslaved men and women encoded messages within quilt patterns that helped fugitives navigate their way out of the South to freedom. For a sneak preview, be sure and see Joans interesting exhibition on Civil War Quilts in the librarys display case. Accompanying Joan will be Denise Rider playing music of the time period and Nayna Christiansen performing a dramatic reading from Harriett Tubmans memoirs. (Friday evening), Friends of the Library welcome Joanna Joseph who will present the colorful story of Lees Ferry through slides and commentary. John Doyle Lee has long been a controversial figure in Utahs history; this evenings presentation promised to shed light on a complex man - a zealot, a pioneer, a scapegoat and an important historical site - one of the few places where wheeled vehicles could cross the rugged terrain of southern .Utah, northern Arizona. Dixie State Colleges instructor Bonnie McGowen will feature students from her ceramics classes. They will demonstrate the art of ceramic making and display their work.
