The company wanted to visit Best Friends Animal Sanctuary to look at the kinds of housing we have for cats. I explained that Best Friends does not support the breeding ofanimals in any form high-quali- ty while there are millions of homeless pets waiting to be adopted, but that they were welcome to visit and look at our facilities if it would help make their cats more comfortable. As I showed them around, the president of the company explained that they need to house many animals at a time, including cell donor animals and surrogate mother cats who will try to carry the implanted cloned embryo to term. Most of the animals abort during their pregnancies or election held at a later date. Election ballots for Districts 3 and 6 will be mailed no later than April 1, 2002, with the election process being completed at Garkanes Annual Meeting Sessions. The session for District 6 will be Tuesday, April 23, 2002 in Tropic, Utah. The session for District 3 is scheduled for the next evening, Wednesday, April 24, 2002, in Bicknell, Utah. produce damaged and de- Garkane members with ques- formed offspring. These people are hoping to be delivered an identical copy of the animal they love so much. But the first irony of the whole, experiment is that C.C. looks nothing like the cat she was cloned from. The cell donor is a calico cat, but CC came out tabby and white! But thats just the start of the differences. Indeed, people are seriously deluding themselves if they imagine that the cat or dog that they love so much is just a bunch of DNA that can be run through a kind of copying. machine when the existing version starts getting old. If you think about it, what you really want to hold onto is not just the reconstituted DNA of the person or pet you loved, but" the relationship you had with them. Relationships are formed through shared experiences. The memories you cherish are of the special times you had together. That relationship and those experiences cannot be cloned. The life you share with loved ones is the product of everything you put into it together. Its understandable that we would want to defy death. But death is a part of life, and part of why we cherish life so much. And while life certainly begins with DNA, the fullness of life involves our environment, expe- our spayneuter program. rience, relationships, trials, Thats because cloning experi- tribulations, joys, and love. ments use up thousands upon Whenever Im ready to add a thousands of eggs. The company wanted to know if we would let them Have the ovaries we would otherwise discard after each surgery. They had already arranged to make a sizeable donation to a large spayneuter organization in Houston, Texas, in exchange for eggs. But we declined to get involved in this. For my part, I asked why they were bringing more animals into this world, when there were not enough homes for the four to five million dogs and cats that are killed every year in shelters around the country. They told me it was customer driven. As soon as they issued their first look for one thats already alive and needs a home. That way, Im saving a life and embarking on a new and wonderful journey of discovery with a new friend. Photo of C.C. by Genetic Savings and Clone. |
