Show I The Holiday Season is filled with hazards as well as happiness. The extra activity of preparing for the festivities bring on fatigue which can lead to illness. Being overtired also makes us more prone to accidents. Certainly our food consumption patterns change. This can be provocation for illness for some of us. Here is an article from a December issue of the R.N. Maga-zin- e that may be useful in preventing injury in the homes of small children. HAVE A CHRISTMAS By Gwen M. Arthur R.N. NON-TOX- Its 7 IC ajn. Christmas morning, and unbeknownst to his sleeping parents, two year old Sammy, awake and curious, is nearly heading for accidental death by poisoning. He toddles through the reamins of his parents Christmas Eve party, stopping to nibble on one or two bright red holly berries -- -- from a table arrangement. Five or ten of these could give Sammy a severe stomachache and diarrhea. As he begins to tire of the berries Sammy pulls a leaf from a native poinsettia plant and munches it. It will add to has stomachache later, but do nothing worse. Had the leaf come from a similar plant thats grown in Hawa'i, the little boy could have died. Sammy sniffs at the nearly empty glasses on the table. Only one ounce of whiskey in his 30 pound body would produce a blood alcohol level of 0.1, enough to make him legally drunk. His next stop is a nearby ashtray, where he ignores the cigarette butts and pops a gleaming slip of foil into his mouth. The foil might cause an intestinal blockage, if he ate enough, but thats nothing compared to what could have happened had he eaten some tobacco. Nicotine from even a small amount of tobacco would have caused violent vomiting, and a cigarettes worth could have killed Sammy. Impossible, you say? Nicotine is one of the strongest poisons in the world, especially in the unburned, ingested form. You say that Sammy would spit out the foul stuff after the first taste? Perhaps, but how many kids have consumed and entire bottle of aspirin once they got the idea into their heads? Continuing his rounds, Sammy stops to pick up some mistletoe berries that have fallen from the sprigs hanging in the doorway. The berries contain enough natural cardiac glycoside to kill him. but, luckily, he munches instead on two M&Ms candies that were varnished to a box as decorations. Theres not enough varnish on the candies to harm Sammy this time. Finally the little boy arrives at his destination, the Christmas Tree, where he pops a small, tasty looking red ornament into his mouth. Unlike the modern variety, this old ornaments paint contains poisonous lead base. The tiny, one-tiexposure isnt enough to harm Sammy, however. He drops the ornament, and it crashes to the floor, which is far better that shattering it in his mouth. When Sammys mother wakes up, she finds her little boy safe and sound in his own living room. Poison proofing a house is no easy task, especially during the harried holiday season. But its far easier than spending the holiday in the emergency department resuscitating a child. Most poison control centers have literature available, at little or no cost, on how to reduce the poison hazards in your home. The precautions that they outline can help both you and your patients have a safer holiday. Check with your local telephone operator or Fmergnecy Department for the location of the poison control center nearest vou. 80-pr- The Blundell Geothermal Plant was down TOO MUCH SCALING: blasted and cleaned parts of the turbine as sand workmen this week which had suffered scaling which cut production by 20 percent.
