Interested In reading it. If not, to add follow up with letters to your Congressmen. Congress provide such an experience right in their back yard? Its a challenge I dont see how any really caring Utah Congressman could pass up. Of course it would take alot of money, but thats never proven to be much of a problem tor Congress. Surely there is enough scratch In the bottom of the pork barrel for such a noble project. There Is a problem, though, In finding enough land for a really magnificent park which would have to be a million or so acres to be any good at all. Obviously, though, where theres a will, theres a way. Through the power of em Inant domain, the Congress could acquire a million acres easy. They might have to tear down a few tire factories and auto plants; and of course they would have to a few Interstate highways and turnpikes, because to be a true national park the new Ohio National Park vould absolutely have to have some roadless ras. Some of their old freeways probably need replacing anyway, so whats the difference. Think of the benefits. Congress could, by a flick of its wrist, bring the true wilderness experience and feeling of solitude to untold masses of people clustered in the nations heartland. Think of all the gasoline that would be saved if didnt have to travel al the way to Yellowstone or Kings Canyon to get that personal feeling of spiritual uplift one gets when he visits a truly great national park. It seems to me that this might be the least our western Congressional delegation could do for our friends back east. Its obvious that delegates from the midwest are so busy worrying about our western lands that they really dont have adequate time to attempt to do something really magnificent for their own constituents. Our fellow Utahns, serving so few folks out here, should certainly be able to find a little time to devote to such a worthy project. Im truly surprised they havent thought of it before now. Get your act together, Jake, Orrln, Jim and Dan. Youre missing a real opportunity. Utahs congressional delegation is missing a real opportunity. They have before them an option that would not only be of great benefit to a great mtdwe stern state and Its people, but would strike a blow for freedom, so to speak, and send a message to many folks east of the Mississippi who are so quick to judge our western values and draw up our western plans for living. But first, a little background: Rep. John Seiberllng of Ohio, an astute and influential lawmaker who made a brief visit to Utah last year, has Introduced Into the 98th Congress HJt. 1214. The bill calls for expanding 12 all of which are national parks and monuments In the west by Including within their boundaries certain public lands now being administered by the Bureau of Land Management which are currently gress: To my knowledge, there Is no major national park or monument In the great state of Ohio. Oh sure, there may be some national historic sites and battlefield momuments, along with some homes were famous people might have been born, but they should have the benefit of a bona fide national park complete with visitor centers, campgrounds, nature trails, wilderness areas and, of course, rangers. With so many people living In close proximity to Ohio, the plan makes a lot sense. Why should those folks have to drive or fly all the way to Utah, Colorado, New Mexico, Texas or California to enWhy shouldn't the joy a true park experience? o RANCHERS MINE FACES BUY OUT 20 off BY Decorating Speaali drapery fabrics Excellent Selection 25 off mm Biirios ruig J4ome Zbecorating, Free Estimates 438-29- Beaver, Utah 67 M 1934 APRIL SURVEY MADE May 3, 1984 Thursday ACRE FEET STORAGE Beaver Field Office Page 4 Dear Ed re-ro- being studied as possible additions to the national wilderness system. Dear Red, Thank you for your recent correspondence regarding the phone access charges which were to go into effect on April 3, 1984, for businesses with more than one phone. I understand and share wur concern that the charge trto $6 a line for Interstate and Inwould harm your busitrastate ness. One of the reasons I voted against Wlrths bill, HJt. Congressman 4102, was because it placed far too much of the funding burden caused by AT&Ts breakup on business, especially small business. In the wake of the Rouse vote for HJt. 4102, the Senate defeated similar legislation. The Senate vote ratified an FCC ruling which was a compromise between the FCCs original access charge ruling and the House legislation. In essence, the battle in the House has already been fought. Those of us who sought to spread the telephone billing burden around more fairly just did not have the votes. Unfortunately, It doesnt appear that Congress plans to take any action to alleviate the plight of the small businessman. No legislation is likely to pass Congress to modify the access charge on small business. Just recently, however, the FCC delayed Implementing the business access charge until June of 1984. It Is uncertain whether or not the FCC will revise Its access In charge on small businesses. addition, there are appeals pending in the courts regarding the access charge, but the courts are unlikely to overturn the FCC ruling. I am sorry I can not report better news. Thank you, once again, tor writing. Sincerely yours, JAMES V. HANSEN More about diabetes this week.
