Show Inman organ transplant donor registry posses Senator Orrin Hatch, pushed through the UJS. Senate a bill that established a national human organ donor registry and takes the first steps toward a national organ transplant policy. The bill now awaits approval of the House of Representatives. The Organ Procurement and Transplantation Act, S. 2048, sets up a national registry outside of government to speed the matching of patients In need of transplants with suitable donors. The bill creates a Task Force on Organ Procurement and Transplantation, which would report toCongress within nine months, recommending appropriate public and private sector roles in the Issue. An annual report from the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) would Inform Congress on the status of transplantation In research and practice. The bill prohibits Interstate buying and selling of organs for transplantation. "It Is timely and essential that we develop a national policy regarding the appropriate federal and private sector roles in organ transHatch said In a stateplantation, ment to the Senate. "This legislation will provide federal funds to complement a national organ procurement and transplantation computer registry, operated by the private sector. This alone will likely save hundreds of lives each year, he said. Perhaps the best thing this legislation will do Is Increase the willingness of people to become potential organ donors themselves, Hatch said.
