Show I Thursday, February 16, 1984 Page A Sweethearts Valentine Dance will be held on February 17 in the Parowan ThirdFourth Ward cultural hall, beginning at 9 pjn. All adults of the Stake are invited to attend the dance, which will feature music from the 1950s. There will be no charge and free dance instruction will also be available. PAROWAN LITERARY CLUB Anna Cox hosted the Literary Club's February 7 meeting in her home. Assisting her were Zona Topham and Golda Guymon. Alice Mitchell gave alesson about Sarah Childress Polk and Edna Brown reported on fidential secretary. It was reported that she probably knew as much about the government at that time as her husband. Sarah Polk was a frugal, religious woman. No alcohol was allowed in the White House while she resided there. She was also Mrs. a shrewd businesswoman. Polk returned home to Nashville after President Polks death. During the. countrys Civil War she took no sides, but would offer assistance to soldiers from both North and South. Margaret M. Taylor was the wife of twelfth President Zachary Taylor, who served for only sixteen months as UJS. President. Mr. Taylor was a soldier for 45 years before being elected. Mrs. Taylor followed him from camp to camp for a quarter of a century, staying behind only when each of the couples six children were born. In Baton Rouge, Louisiana a family home Margaret Mackall Taylor. Sarah C. Polk was the wife of eleventh U.S. President James K. Polk. An educated lady, Mrs. Polk was 40 years old when her husband was elected in 1845. Burial was in the Miners-vlll- e Cemetery under the direction of Boyer Southern Utah Mortuaries. Pallbearers were Mark Yardfey, Russel Rose, Robbie Eyre, Roctoey Carter, Blair Coon and Jeff Atkla. Honorary pallbearers were Brett Yardley, Allen Miller, Kip Sherwood, Ryan Wunderlich and Kelly Wood. The family prayer was given by Kendal G. Eyre; Prelude, Eleanor Marshall; Solo, "Youre Not Alone, Rebecca Eyre accompanied by Gonzalez) who is trying to get him to give it up. Charlie Brown (Matt Marshall) looks on uncon was established and there Margaret milked cows and fed chickens. Mrs. Taylor is remembered for acting as a nurse to the soldiers who fought with her husband in the frontier battles. She did not enjoy being in the White House and turned over entertainment duties to her daughter Betty, who was an educated lovely hostess. There are no known After pictures of Mrs. Taylor. President Taylors death in 1850, Margaret retired to the home ofher only son in Louisiana. PAROWAN CITY COUNCIL On Wednesday, February 1, the City Council met in regular ses- sion. Councilman Garry Bentley reported that the City dump will now be opened at 12:00 pan. each day and then in the Spring it will be open 24 hours a day. This will continue on a trial basis, and if the public violates the dumping outside of designated areas, the dump will have to go back to the same hours previously established. Police Chief Wayne Townsend has requested fencing in the break water from 100 East to about 200 West. This fence would be on the north side of the break water only. Judge Ken Adams asked that Joce Beck be accepted as Justice of the Peace protem while he attends a convention in Reno. The Council approved the request and Joyce Beck was appointed for the period of March 6 through 10, 1984. The Council voted to advertise for the position of Crossing Guard and Custodian. Mayor John C. Pendleton read two letters of commendation written by Chief Wayne Townsend for w iulu inn m jiw R-- ficers Steven Johnson and David Hintze for service above and beOfficer yond the call of duty. Johnson was responsible tor recovering stolen hydraulic parts and arresting the theft suspect during Card of September. Officer Hintze was instrumental in the arrest of the suspect of a Swiss Village-burglar- y and grand theft from a Brian Head snowmobile business. Bothofficers were commended by Chief Townsend for their thoroughness and investigative ability.
